Basically, i bought a fiat cinquecento for a laugh a few weeks ago, and to use to keep the milage and work crap out of my fiesta, and to make it even more funny, i want to paint it yellow, leaving the passengers door red (inbetweeners).

The car looks pretty straight, not that im too worried about it being perfect. Its currently red, am i right in thinking if i key it up with a bit of 400 grit, and dont get any bare metal, will i still need to use primer?

You shouldn't need primer if you don't go through to bare metal. I wouldn't think you'd need to go as coarse as 400 grit.

If your going a different colour as suggested you will want to use primer otherwise it will take alot of paint to cover, and you wont match it very easily in the future.
