Hello to all,

My name is Drew and I live in the Australian Capital Territory-Canberra
I have taken on a job "Italian job" for a friend/client and after considerable research have become insanely fond of the Mini (BMC,Morris,Leyland,Austin,Rover)

I have purchased a 1997 Rover Import car from Japan (as Mini's were only available in Australia until the late 70's early 80's) with the intention of replicating the the classic mini in the early scenes of the Italian job movie which Charlize Theron drives.

I have just taken possession of the car and have a problem with it stalling when coming to stop, ie traffic lights.

If anyone has experience with this problem I'd greatly appreciate hearing about the causes and remedy's,
Look forward to talking with you all.

Regards,
Drew

Hi Dru in Australia and welcome to TMF. Can't really help with the stalling issue but i will move your post to the problems and technical issues section and hopefully you will get a suitable reply.

Regardless of the stalling enjoy your new car and welcome to the diverse world of Mini's. :D

More about myself?

I got into car detailing straight out of college and spent almost every day for the following 9 years doing just that so hopefully I can offer some experience of my own to you all?

Since then (about 7 years) continue working on cars/motor cycles & aircraft outside my day job.

Are there any other Australians on this forum or people from Canberra?

Is the car fuel injected or carb?

1997 would be a fuel injection car in the UK and I'd imagine in Japan too since they are stricter on emissions than we were at that point and that was the main reason for them going to injection. But..... it's had plenty of time for a previous owner to have made changes and it's not unknown for stolen cars to appear in other countries masquerading as something they are not (generally late cars pretending to be earlier but anything can happen).

Is it manual or auto? Autos are more common in Japan than they ever were here in the UK.

Does it have air-con? Minis with air-con are common in Japan and they had some trickery to increase the tickover if the AC pump was engaged to account for the extra load - a problem with this from either direction could result in stalling. Either you have the AC on and the tickover isn't being raised or the AC clutch isn't working properly and even though it isn't turned on and the car thinks it's off and therefore isn't increasing the tickover the pump is still being driven.

Of course this is all pure speculation without more info about the car and what's actually going on.

When it stalls - do the revs drop slowly or suddenly?

Has it had a recent service? - are things like fuel and air filters likely to be clean or could they be mostly blocked by years of gunge? Are the spark plugs clean? HT leads and dizzy cap new and in good condition (assuming it has a dizzy cap).

Hey guy's,

Thanks for the welcoming,

**Ibrooks,

Thank you especially, I was hoping to find an expert :)
The car is injected with a/c, I'll read over your post again but given its manual/injected and has a/c where do I start?

Lain,

It is well in need of a service, I have to try get it through rego inspection first as the previous owner wants to keep the numberplates.

Thanks,
Drew

Please bear with me people as I work out the forum/ topics posting etc

I need to redo the seats I have with the seats from the Italian job the black seats with silver/grey centre insert, is there somewhere I can buy this trim set or if I need to get them done through trimmer/upholsterer is literally silver or a light grey?

Thanks,
Drew

http://www.gaima.co....r/RoverMEMS.pdf

MEMS advances the timing for minor idle speed adjustments and after that increases the stepper motor position if that isn't sufficient.

All the MEMS does re AC is to make sure the dual pressure switch is OK, and if it is, to energize the clutch if the AC self contained control unit calls for it.

To the OP, I have a full set of MEMS hardware including ECU and all sensors, throttle body etc here in Indonesia if you need it - may be more economic than shipping from the UK. contact me for a deal.

Drew

Expert - keep looking as I'm not too familiar with the injected Minis so any advice on them that I can give is generic.

So it's injected - single point or multi-point? (SPi or MPi). Probably more for other people's benefit than mine.

Where to start? Well since it sounds like a fairly minor problem I'd go with a thorough service and you might well find that it cures the problem without having to dig further. Oil and filter as a matter of course (20w50 mineral oil no matter what anyone else tries to tell you). Fuel filter and air filter. Coolant. Plugs leads and dizzy cap if it has one (SPi still has a dizzy but MPi doesn't).

See what that does.

As it happens our customer has just opened an office in Canberra so I'm now supporting two servers out there. Unfortunately they won't send me out to do it locally  :(

Thanks again Lain,

I'll have to look closer when I get a chance but have not noticed a dizzy, it's all crammed in there pretty tight so I could be wrong.

However it doesn't look like the diagrams in the link posted by Captain Mainwaring.

I'll post some photos... Soon, maybe not tonight.
