I used to use them on my Escorts years ago and bought them from caravan dealers. Be warned though I was stopped by Police on a few occasions for not having a front facing number plate. Check to make sure your not breaking the law. ;D

you probably will as you can't buy a stick on plate that complies with the current rules and mount it up right

you can of course leave your current one in place as well

Generally the Old Bill are not particularly interested on the plates on a classic car. Look at the E-Type, for example, which has the plate flat on the bonnet. I've never had a problem except for a policeman who once told me, at a petrol stop in the middle of the night on a rally in Wales, that my bonnet number plate was illegal. I told him that I could read it even if he couldn't and that if he wanted to report me I would pay the £30 fine. He just walked away.

With a pre-73 car which can have black & white plates it's not a problem and I made my own white letters from Fablon and sprayed the black background on the bonnet with semi-matt black paint.

Police round here are not really bothered about much really but they know where all the good coffee shops and burger vans are so I don't see it being too much of a problem especially as its a second car.

Any more suggestions please.

I bought mine from eBay, isleofwight graphics or something I think it was. It's a magnetic, reflective version so doesn't raise eyebrows as much.

Don't know if similar issues have been had with the reg plate but when I was learning to drive I lost 3 magnetic L plates that were on the bonnet. It also left behind loads of little scratches in a perfect square.

Not personally had any trouble, but mileage may vary ;-)

A couple of months ago when I still had BVY me n the girlfriend went to North Wales for the weekend (from London)

My number plate fell off in the petrol station so I just chucked it in the car and carried on. When we got back I kept meaning to put it on before I got pulled over. Especially because the police station is directly opposite my house and I have to park in the in front of them.

However after at least 10 occasions where I drove toward a copper who couldn't have missed the fact I had no plate. I decided that i would see how long before I get pulled. In the end, after 2 months I had to put it on because I was going to swap minis with someone.

I had this problem as well. I think I lost more than 3 magnetic L plates. I used electrical tape to hold them on in the end which seemed to just about work. I wouldn't suggest having a magnetic number plate on bonnet.

Available from Craigs Plates:

Self-adhesive number plates for the bonnet of your car.

These number plates are reflective, and pass BSAU145d reflection tests; the characters are cut to the correct size and font, ie New Charles Wright. The height is 79mm and the spacing is correct as per DVLA requirements. However, these plates are NOT road legal!

Why?

We believe that because these number plates use to be sold in kit form in shops, it meant people could make their own plates. DVLA did not want the consumer making their own plates as the room for error was greater! Pre-September 2001 these plates were always seen as  acceptable. However, since the change in legislation people have become more conscious of putting them on their car. We sell these plates ready made for you, and in three different colours white (front), yellow, (rear generally for trailer boards and caravans), and black for vintage (pre 1973). They also come in various options we do like to give the customer some choice!

Details and prices here:

I've always got mine from here, good quality, pre-assembled and reflective with correct font and spacing. Was on mine for over a year before i had the font end resprayed! Will have one to go back on when the cars ready again. I used to keep snapping them off when they were down low! :P
