hi ther guys,

firstly i want to say thank you to all those that are helping me out with my mini problems, i have just done a massive check of all my mpi and found an awful lot wrong, so far i have completely replaced the rear shocks, wheel bearings and added some fresh new cones, today i was planning on replacing the adjust ride on the FRONT as the thread is completely bent, i started by trying to use the compression tool, and as there is no way into the spring i dont know how to compress it to get it out. This led me to look at the springs and they have completely rotted and need changing asap. To be honest this is the only thing that i overlooked and i glad i have found them.

firstly could someone please shed some light on how i compress the springs to get the adjust ride out,if compression is not a way of doing it, could i just cut the adjust ride out, or is there to much pressure to be abe to do this and be a big no no? i have a fresh set to go in. and also could someone please point me towards the best cones to replace these springs with i have fresh moutlon genuine ones on the rear is cones the best thing to replace again or should i look at springs?

could someone please reply asap as this is my normal driving car and need her on the road asap

all the best and thank you once again

craig

You have to remove the tower bolt on top of the grpnt subframe. The rears need the dampers removed to lower the raius arm.

Hope this helps

Yep undone the tower bolt but the compression can't screw into the top on the spring so can't be compressed, the rears have already been done...

Is the thread damaged on the compressor or the cone?? are you using the right thread. new should be metric, pre 80's will be imperial.

to be clear - you are trying to remove coil springs not rubber cones?

Yep trying to remove coil spring, but can't seem to find the hole for the thread for the compressor to go into the coil? unless they are cheap Japanese ones?, just wondering if there is another way, the coil spring is out of line and not seated properly but I can't decompress it enough to see if there is a thread to put the compressor in

Hence why I'm asking if I can just cut the adjust ride or is stuff gonna go flying off left right a centre and do damage?

There's no way of compressing coil spring in a Mini.

Personally I would remove the rebound buffer then the rear nut and retaining plate bolts off the top arm pin and slide the pin out. Once the pin's out it should be a piece of cake to remove the top arm and then the HiLo and coil spring.

i think we are getting confused here.

rubber cone which acts as a spring on the mini, requires a tool to compress to aid removal etc.

A coil spring (metal coil) is a conversion which is not standard and doesnt require the compression tool

I have the coil springs on here,
https://www.google.c...9RbprMp4BoiQM:m

As in what appears to be these, however because they are offset and compressed I can't seem to see if they have a thread in the top for th compressor to go in....I can't adjust the hilos down anymore because halfway up the thread is bent and the locking nut won't come down anymore.....

I need another way to get them out..
Sorry if not I will try and post pictures

you dont use a compressor with those metal coil springs. (saying that, the huddersfield mini spares ones appear to have a thread in the top, these are unknown made as far as im aware.)

If you cannot adjust the hi lo, then you will need to remove the top arm completely and get the hi lo and spring out.

I would do as tupers as sugested seems like the only way other than cutting, but if its under tension that could be scary

The cheaper coil springs have an aluminium plate which fits between the hi-lo and the spring that has a threaded hole for the compressor, but you shouldnt need it. If the shocker and rubber rebound buffer (under the upper arm, between the arm and the subframe) are removed and the car jacked up so as to allow full downwards travel of the upper arm, the coil spring assembly and hi-lo should be loose in the subframe tower, even with the hi-lo wound out. Then you can remove the upper arm to remove the assembly. The proper Minitastic springs dont need these ally plates but still dont need a cone compressor to remove.
