I've recently fitted a replacement dizzy. It's a Lucas 65DM4, same as the old one. Both were stamped Auu1536 which is the standard mainstream cooper dizzy.

The old one at 6 deg at idle gave about 29 degrees max advance (3500 rvs) and it ran well. The new one at 6 deg at idle gives 22 deg at 3500 with the vac plug off and 40 on. If I set it to the old 29 deg at 3500 I'm seeing 22 at idle!

Basically I can't get the timing right at idle and at 3500. It's as though the curve is different but the two dizzys are apparently identical.

The new dizzy was described as new old stock but I'm wandering if its a second or been tinkered with.

Any thoughts on how to sort this without replacing the replacement dizzy?

You could use the internal weights out of the old one with new springs from the new. thats a big difference in total advance

Have you whipped the base plate off and had a look inside? anysign of mods ? worst comes to the worst either mod the advance weights for the advance you want or send it to HH Ignitions and they will mod it  for you, they did a RS2000 distributor for me when I setup my cousins 2.1Pinto which was way off due the cam/head changes.

Cheers. I wouldn't know what I'm looking for to be honest! Any idea of the likely cost to have it recurved? Sounds like that's my best option.

If you want a standard spec you should be able to get standard weights and springs off the shelf - assuming that's the issue.

Cheers chaps. I'll give them a call. 35 quid is bearable, and preferable to me messing it up!

Kernowcooper - will do.

Tamworthbay - good question! I got a new one for pretty much what I sold a 23 year old one for. Seemed a good idea at the time. Going forward I'll remember the old sayings about not fixing what ain't broke, and only getting what you pay for!

Quick update.  I spoke with Phil at H+H today and have posted the dizzy.  All being well I'll have it back by the weekend and can be back on the road.

Thanks for the recomendation.

No problem mate he's good as gold and done several for me, and all have done the trick. Did he say what the degrees he recommended for your application

He didn't - he was busy and asked me to write down the spec and send it with the dizzy.  He'll call me before he does it to discuss and sort payment.  It'll be intersting to know what he says.
