Although I love my very cool 1986 Mini Mayfair, one of the things that has slightly frustrated me has been the speedometer. It's hopelessly off. It's always miles below the true speed (as measured by my satnav).

I was on a random drive through the country today and I suddenly realised something: I'm such an idiot.

Can anyone work out what I realised I'd been doing?

Yup. You got me. I was reading the rev counter. Duh.

To be fair, the numbers are the same, so it was reasonable. And in my old car the speedo was on that side.

I actually find the speedo difficult to read as the steering wheel gets in the way. If I ever do my car up and redo the dashboard I might get one of those central ones.

Make sure you get a good most now are now coming on 40yrs old and suffer from the main needle bearing wear and jump about 0-30mph. But you can buy a new one from speedy cables

Excellent :)

I remember frequently making the same mistake when I was getting used to driving my mayfair years ago.  Every car I drove while learning had the speedo on the right and every time I switched between my mum's Saxo (if the mini was undergoing repairs/maintenace) and the mini I'd mess it up again.
