Question About Gauges

I've seen minis with different gauges other than the orifinal centre one and the clock cluster. Where you do you get them from as I'm thinking about changing my dashboard And my gauges :P

  Just about any auto electrical supplier, competition preparation supplier, classic or kit specialist, auto jumbler or custom builder will have a good selection.  All mine came directly from Smiths but there are loads of suppliers out there.

Have a look at the MG gauge range if retro look is what you're after, you can find a list at the gauge shop, although i'm not reccomending them as their customer service isnt good, but just to give you and idea, then get them from your favourite supplier.

www.greengauges.com - design your own! They are CAI gauges and CAI are the current owners of the SMITHS brand and tooling.

 

Second hand is an option - Triuph Dolomites had a reasonable selection of gauges and they come up cheap fairly regularly. I used a set from a Scimitar in my Clubby (had to get creative with the rev counter to get it to read correctly).

 

There are plenty of others - buy a kit-car magazine and there will be plenty of advertisers.

ok thanks! but how do the speedo's work? are they sensored?

  Standard speedo heads, and the majority of aftermarket types that will normally be fitted to Minis, are mechanical.  Driven by a cable from the gearbox.

The speedo from the Scimitar (SE6) needs 1000 turns of the speedo cable per mile to read correctly and it's the same fitting as a Mini speedo cable so with a little care with the drive gears in the box it just works.

 

Other electronic speedos use a sensor of some sort to provide pulses per mile and there are DIP switches on the back of the speedo to calibrate it. Sometimes the sensor is a coil that fastens on a bracket somewhere near a component that rotates with the wheels and little magnets are glued to the item - effectively it counts magnets. Other sensors can go on the end of the original cable and convert the turning of the cable into pulses. Yet more can be a sensor that screws direct into the gearbox in place of the cable - lot of manufacturers are doing this nowadays so the electronic speedos can often use the original sensor.
