hey I have a 1978 mini clubman and recently when I went to my auto parts dealer to get some engine oil and filter, there was an issue as the guy had ran out of oil filters for my mini.. but he suggested I use a Mercedes W124 oil filter which is the same size and thread as the one im using now only difference is its longer.. can I use this oil filter without any problems?

Oil Filter Question.

So long as it's the same in all other respects then yes. Not all oil filters have bypass valves, and I'm not sure if it's possible for a filter to be designed with a flow direction (although the bypass valve if fitted would have to be the right way around). A larger filter will be better in the long run.

this filter seems to have a metal thing when I look through the center hole.. but my old oil filter doesn't have any..

Having looked, I can see that the W124 is longer and the same size seal. The valve appears closer to the top of the filter that on the mini one, I'm not sure if this makes a difference. The main query I have would be the thread. The mini one is 3/4 x 16. I can't say what the W124 filter has, although it looks similar.

i have a 1962 mini of which I did the oil change on saturday, so has the earlier filter same as yours.
I also happen to own 2 Mercedes W124s.
The W124 filter is much taller than the Mini's one. Personally I'd buy the correct filter elsewhere as it needs to fit right otherwise unfiltered engine oil will make its way past - i got mine from minispares.

well thanks guys for the inputs.. i really appreciate it.. well it screwed on pretty easily so i think the thread is the same.. not even a bit of friction and i could smoothly tighten it with my hand and then fully tighten with the correct tool.. so far it seems okay but as soon as my guy has ready stock of the correct oil filter i might change it back. the spare part shop guy says its the same seal size and thread size only the capacity is larger and thats why he recommended it to me.. well will have to keep an eye on it :)

Merc one is the same....I'd have put good money on it being metric.

I have wondered this, but about MGB filters. They are the same thread and seal size but about twice the capacity. I haven't tried it as no-one seems to know if they are similar internally. If anyone has any old mags from the 60s/70s they might be able to find fitment listings for old filters. Quite often the old guys at motorfactors are brilliant for gems of info like this, but it is a bit of a risk if you can't be certain.
Cut one in half and compare with OEM - from my distant memory of an old MGB, the fllter was oriented the same way as a mini - can't see there could be too much difference.

Hmm, 3 W124's I have had none of them have screw on engine oil filters..... must of been a M103 petrol engine which i think did have a screw on filter.
Just make sure its not a fuel filter which IS screw on, like a mini engine oil filter, and is a similar size IIRC !!!

I've used the MGB filter in the past to increase the filtration capability and the oil capacity and have had no problems.
The MBG is a 'B'-series engine and is very similar in design to the 'A'-series, just a bit bigger.
