Hi all, gonna be swapping engines in my 1990 city soon. The replacement motor is from an 84/85 metro.
There both A+ 998cc.
Will the Speedo work properly with the New engine or do I need to swap bits over? G

What ratios are the diff in both ? I assume you 1990 is on 12inch wheels? depends what the turns per mile TPM was in the metro speedo head compared to yours, you can always get a different speedo drive if its out.

The car is on 12" wheels and it's still on the original city e motor at Mo. That's a 3.1 diff I think?
The metro unit has a 3.44 ratio.
Should I swap the plastic cog and worm gear over ?
Cheers g

No you should do the sums and work out which bits you need to swap to make it work first time - it's hard work changing them after the engine is installed and a little effort now is worth it.

Confirm the diff ratio on the engine that's going in - be certain.

How many turns per mile is your speedo calibrated to?

Count the teeth on the speedo drive cog and the worm gear on the engine that's on the floor - that lets us know at least half of what we've got to work with. Once your Mini engine is out you can count the teeth on the cogs in it and you might well have a combination that will work - failing that you might need to buy a cog to get the speedo working correctly but again with what you already have you might only need to buy one part to get a good combination (or if you've got time to advertise on here someone might have the necessary one in their parts drawer).

Thank you so much for the info. Will check whats in the New engine and go from there.

What would we do without tmf? (prob write to miniworld and get told to send it to a specialist!)

Cheers g
