My Mini has had that swap done to it, but before I got it so I don't know if they had to do anything particular with it. But seeing as later Mini auto's were the 1275 I would have though it was more or less a straight swap. Mine has the Metro gear stick and housing in it as well rather than the mini one, but again, it looks like it was meant to go there and I haven't noticed any bodging. The guys that did it said the Metro gearbox has a park option and that the Mini one didn't but I haven't checked this out - mine has the park option but I haven't checked it out on a factory 1275 yet.
Forgot to add, the mounting is under there, but it's very tight...

Straight swap, but as above you'll need the selector off the metro...
1275's have a park, whereas the 998 do not.
You'll also need things like a 1275 top hose and radiator bracket, for when you swap the rad from the 998, but this is an engine thing, not an auto thing.

Later Minis had a park option too....I'm guessing the quadrant is the same as the later Mini quadrants. It's worth dropping a little lube into the bottom when you have it apart as the steel rod inserts can gum up to the alloy housing if not used for a while.
Try and keep all the bits safe - a new cable is £125 if you damage the old one!

You will need to use the metro one , the cable connection is different for the 998 and also the selector positioning will be wrong for the 1275 auto box...
It's not the fact that it came from a metro which is causing the problem. The auto gearbox for the 998 and 1275 are different inside and have different selections, ie the 1275 has a park and the 998 does not...
It is VERY important that the selector is connected correct and set up post installation, if it is not, the suto box will not work..
My advice is not take the selector cable off the box, this was you don't need to sort the set up out.

The adjustment is straightforward - loosen the single clamp screw under the bump plate, put the box in park, put the selector in park, lock the screw up, job done - the rest of the gears will be in the right place - don't work from the "drive" end of the box.
When I said use a mini selector I meant one from a later SPi car that had park -
From what I can see, the Metro 1275's with the Mk2 box didn't have park, but it's not 100% clear.

Right ok thanks a lot guys! I was going to just modify the top part inside the car to fit the older looking selector rather than use the ugly metro one ! But oh well we will see ! The metro is 1988 if that helps and it has park option ! Cheers!
You can't mix and match like that. You have to use a quadrant with P with a gearbox that has Park.
I'd try and find a second hand one if it was me -
The P type selector and box have a longer cable stroke to accommodate the Park position . Look at somerfield minis parts list, they are completely different assemblies.

Just to add, the park option is a great feature and I always use it when I'm parked up, even on the flat, both in the Mini and my Subaru just in case the brakes should ever fail or I don't pull the handbrake lever up enough. Mine is apparently the one out of a Metro so it has a gear know rather than a T, but the housing fits fine on the floor. I'll try and post a pic later if I remember.

The metro and the mini selectors for the 1275 auto box are the same... which is why the metro one fits the mini.

I thought they physically looked different which is why the OP wanted to stick with the mini one, albeit the intestines may well be the same.?
