You can get an adaptor which replaces your sump plug and the temp gauge connects to that to read oil temp

A temperature gauge would not have a direct oil connection anyway.  Mechanical temperature gauges normally use a long copper capillary tube filled with a very elastic gas to transmit the temperature.  They are quite inconvenient in a position like the sump plug that you need to get into often as the capillary is very fragile and can't be disconnected from the gauge.  Personally I think you are better off monitoring the oil temperature at the main gallery, which will be noticeably higher than that in the sump, but either will be fine.  Electrical temperature gauges are more than accurate enough, only the response time of certain types is a drawback really.

Some MPI's use an oil temp gauge and an electric sender. The sensor is not fed via the ECU so you can use the gauge and sender. I took mine out and replaced it with an oil pressure gauge. I did this a long time ago. Gauge is lost from about 6 house moves since.

The MPi block has a specific fitting for the sender though, it isn't present on any earlier blocks.
