Hi, Need some help and advice please. I am changing the timing chain and tensioner on my 79 pre a plus 998 mini. The crank pulley had quite a bit of play and would turn about 15 or so degrees whilst the crank and the crank bolt remained still (probably goes some way to explain why it never pulled quite as it should despite the timing appearing to be spot on!). When I took it off the start timing chain I noticed what appears to be a lot of wear on the locating cut out. the crank shaft also has some wear at the end but not quite so much.

I believe the only solution would be to replace the pulley and hope the wear on the crank shaft is not to severe. Are there any other solutions as I really didn't want to be shelling out any more cash as I have just spent 500 on getting pats for the front suspension. I also need to get it sorted asap as I really wanted the engine sorted for the mini spares open evening next Tuesday! Pics of the pulley and crank shaft are attached. What would cause the wear? Just high mileage or something else? The crank bolt did not seem to be loose when I took it off but this is the first time I have ever undone one so im not really sure how it should feel. (I believe it should be torqued to 70 lbft)

Assuming it needs a new one would his be the right part: http://minispares.co...ulley.aspx|Back to search

It seems to be the only one on minispares and it seems different to mine?

Thanks in advance Rob

Replace that pulley for sure... I'd take the timing gear off as well and replace the woodruff key while your at it.. That would have taken a beating!! Wonder why it did that, strange thing for it to do...:S

You seen to have a fair bit of wear in there. What about the woodruff key. What 's it like.

You might be lucky and get away with just replacing the pulley and key. Not sure what damage has been done to the crank.

Hi cheers for the quick replies. the woodruff keys are already on order along with timing gears and chain kit which I ordered last week. Do you know where I can get a good used or new crank pulley for my engine? that one on mini spares looks different to mine. there seems to be almost no wear where the timing gear sits on the crank as you can see bit of a step on he locating pin. not took timing gear off yet as too dark to see properly now! tensioner was well worn though with nice gouges where chain had been cutting in to it and chain was very slack. glad I decided to sort it as could have been even worse if left rattling the way it was

We've had 2 do this and only thing we could put it down to was the bolt which holds the pulley on...If you notice there is a stepped section on the shank behind the head..

Its the same width as the crank...Even torqued up on ours it allowed a small amount of in and out play of the pulley..this caused wear on the pulley and woodruff.

You can get a bolt with no step

Is this the correct part for a preaplus engine?

Cheers Rob

The Minispares one is an afte rmarket product to be used in conjunction with a crank damper, I suppose it ought to work without the damper. I don't see any reason why you couldn't effect a repair by making/adapting a woodruff key to fit. If you're looking for a new pulley the A+ variety incorporates a damper so is a bit better.

It looks like a pre A+ crank pulley - yes.

right am a bit confused now as to what I actually need. Don't really want to go for the mini spares one as I don't really have spare cash. Does it matter what type of pulley I put on it? I'll upload some pics of the whole pully as im not 100% sure what type it is. The engine is definitly pre a plus.

I wouldn't like to commit yours looks very much like my A plus pulley (1984)

http://www.somerford...age=page&id=112

try here gives the list of pulleys for various years...

The one you listed off ebay part no is for between 1963 - 1970

later ones probably just got the timing notch because the timing marks moved from the flywheel to the crank pulley

I had that problem too, on an A+, and as several have said it is because the shoulder of the bolt bottoms before it is gripping the pulley, or because the crankshaft is slightly too long. When correctly torqued up, all the load is transferred by friction and the key is only providing location.

I fixed it simply by fitting a large washer outboard of the pulley, the bore of the washer being sufficient to clear the crankshaft spigot.

Hi, all sorted now. Have changed chain, sprockets woodruff keys, tensioner, pulley and fitted the upgraded crank bolt from minispares. No play at all now:-) checked everything and all apart from the old pulley and the woodruff key is ok. Crank got no wear at all so I guess I found it just in time. Not tried starting yet as got to rebuild carb tmrw but turned over by hand and seems fine. Should back on road tomorrow. Cheers for the help everyone.
