Hi, looking for some exhaust advice for my standard 1999 MPi Cooper.

Currently as it left the factory: cat, middle box and rear box.

Been thinking of fitting a Fletcher rear box (3" side exit type) but not sure if I should go further and replace the middle box with a straight pipe? or leave the mid box and remove the Cat instead? or just simply replace only the rear Fletcher box and leave the cat & mid box in place?

Would like to have a bit more sound, but not too much.

Be careful about the new MOT.

There is a test item on emissions.

Previously the test just checked the emissions, now it looks if the CAT is still there too, as you may not pass the limits without it.

The engine number  (12X  etc)  is linked in the MOT database to the limits allowed on the emissions test. Older carb engines have a higher limit compared to the injection vesions.

If its sound your after then the Fletcher 3" will be loud'ish with the cat still in but it wont improve the performance the optimum size for a Mini is 1 3/4" its never a good idea to go to big though, I always find the bigger rear boxes just loud. your cat if removed would free up some BHP and the exhaust note would change, but come MOT time it would need to go back in

Did have a feeling that the MOT could be a problem without the Cat....probably best left in place.

You could keep a CAT in place and replace with the Sports CAT that Minispares stock http://www.minispare...ance~kits.aspx| would mean you could still pass emissions and have a little better performance and noise. They are expensive though but it does mean then you dont have to worry about putting the CAT back on come MOT time.

Fletcher back box fitted. Had to remove the middle box. Fitting guy made a connection piece. Kept the Cat in place.

Sounds really good, not too loud, just nice. Could be a bit loud if on a long motorway trip, but around town it's spot on.

Thanks for the help!
