I am thinking of going to 11 studs on the cylinder head, but the engine is built. I do have an 11 stud block in the garage, but am a bit scared about the drilling/tapping of the 1380.

Sooo, is there anywhere I can get proper dimensions from?

I could take measurements off the old block, but they may already be drilled at tolerance limits, so I could end up too far off location. :proud:

Or is it just best to wait for an 11 stud head to turn up and use that as a pattern?

Piece of pee Matt. Use either and old or new head gasket. Im pretty sure they all have the extra holes for the studs

hi do yourself a favour and get a local machine shop to do it for you
if you make a slight mistake on this it could be a lot more expensive .

a machine shop will have the correct size drilling machine to do the job with minimal effort . home bench drills flex under strain .

Thanks for the advice, but it'll be done on the Bridgeport in the machine shop at work so it'll be fine really. I was wondering about using the head gasket, but I wasn't sure about how accurate it needs to be really.

Im pretty sure that how most engine builders do it. I think I even see a section in Miniworld where some top builder was using one. I cant see it being too hard to find the center of the hole.

Lol, no probs, like I said, thanks for the advice. If I were actually going to drill/tap it it robably would be a mess. But I think I will get the engineers at work to do it!

Only problem is that the engine is built up, so I gotta be MAJOR careful with swarf etc. I am thinkin of wrappin the bugger up in clingfilm before doin it and pluggin all of the holes etc. I really don't want to do a full strip down to do it! :proud:

you cold use a hoover as you drill it to suck up any swarf.

a head gasket is how most engine builders i have seen do it, and its what i am going to be using on mine.

on the new minibuilded dvd bill sollis says the hole closest to the water pump breaks through into the water jacket so that may not be such a good thing if any swarf gets into there.

and what made sence to me was if a MG metro turbo engine is ok on 9 studs why fit 11 to mine

Maybe it's worth me asking Mr Cylinder Head supplier, see if he thinks it needs the extra two. It is going to run a high compression ratio (11:1), so I think the 11 studs will be necessary meself.

The water jacket thing is a concern MOWOG. I was looking at the block yesterday and was thinking that there wasn't much metal between where the front stud goes and the water pump cut-out. I will have a look at me other block and see how deep that one is drilled. :proud:

I dont think you could as it would put uneven pressure on the head gasket
