Are you feeling much through the steering wheel? does it feel like it's pulling?

Id hazard a guess that the balljoints are coming loose. Take the wheel and brakes off, remove the hub and see if you can wobble the upper or lower balljoint around. It should be pretty stiff to move. If its loose, remove balljoint and take a thin shim out and retest. Dont do it so tight that its impossible to move though.

If its that violent, there is something seriously wrong.

Check steering rack mounts, top steering arm to hub bolts, track rod end, tie bushes.

There will be something major wrong or just about to let go.

It is possibly a CV joint or wheel bearing about to fail spectacularly, so be careful. I am inclined to think more towards CV.

I would recheck the balljoints are done up tight. I had one come loose after hitting a pothole. the balljoint managed to undo, even with the new tab washer bent into place. the whole car shook like it had a buckled wheel as soon as i went above 45mph. it was the bottom one that came loose, so it wasn't easy to spot. when I braked, it made the hub move back slightly, which in turn loaded up the steering rack, making it pull hard to the left. worth a look.
