Hi all,

I need some welding gas and after a bit of research I am completely confused.

This twin pack of disposable bottles on eBay for £27 mans you get 220 litres, is that correct?

http://www.ebay.co.u...=item257f30086b

However, for £36, Adams Gas have a 9 litre bottle.

https://apps.facebook.com/rentfreegas/

I would also have to buy a regulator for this which aren't cheap.

Surely that is crap value for money and it would be far better to get the first option?

I'm sure there's a very simple answer to this confusion and I am being completely stupid.

Thoughts?

I assume that the disposables are referring to the 110 litres of gas that has been compressed into the much smaller volume of liquid inside the cylinders, whereas the Adams gas cylinder is a referring to the size of the cylinder and the amount of compressed gas liquid it holds.

Disposable cylinders are really not very good value for money, the average welding time is only about six minutes per cylinder. The set up costs with refillables (including purchasing a regulator) are much higher but you get a lot more gas for your money. I use Hobbyweld as opposed to Adamsgas, and their website explains the cost of refillables vs disposables quite well. http://www.hobbyweld...7&t=Why Change?

I can't work out the size of the Hobbyweld bottles, but if they're the same size, they appear to be the same price as Adams gas give or take.

The 9 litres refers to the volume of water the cylinder will hold, not the volume of compressed gas!

The licensed trade has much tighter controls on the storage and use of Co2 cylinders than it used to, so getting a cylinder from your local pub tends to be much more difficult than it used to be. Plus argon/co2 mix makes a better sheilding gas for MIG welding, than the pure co2 that you get from pub cylinders anyway.

I don't think you are comparing like with like.  The 9litre bottle is of pure argon (which you don't need).  The Clarke bottles are CO2 with a little argon to reduce splatter.

They're also 9 litre cylinders, but unless things have changed, Adams gas prices vary from agent to agent. When I compared the two a couple of years ago, it was cheaper to pay for a Hobbyweld cylinder to be delivered to my door, than it was to go and collect one from my local Adams gas supplier.

As I live in Kent, I deal with Adams Gas directly, that may be where the difference is!

I thought he was talking about the Adams gas 9L argon 5% mix cylinder at £36, not the 9L pure argon at £112.60!

Thanks for the info guys. I did think it looked too good to be true.

I will look into the Hobbyweld products. Also, their regulators are cheaper than what I've seen before. I assume this is the required one http://www.hobbyweld...1 stage 2 gauge

I'd rather spend a bit more to start with but end up saving money, also the regulators that are used with the disposable bottles are utter crap.

Thanks

Sorry but when I looked at that Facebook link it came up with a 9L pure argon quote.  I have looked again twice and each time it has come up with a different price.

It's not only the OP who is confused!

Thats a CO2 one, I think CO2 bottles are female and argon mix are male (although both pictures are of the same regulator)

Thanks for that. I wasn't sure whether it was the CO2 one or the Argon one I needed as it's got both gases in it.

To save starting another topic, I am also buying an auto dimming mask. This is the best one I have found http://www.ebay.co.u...984.m1438.l2649

However, I'm a bit concerned about how cheap it is. I couldn't find any that are more expensive that aren't covered in flames or skull shaped. Does anyone have any experience with this mask or could recommend another?

Thanks
