Hi,

I'm going to weld in a heel board repair panel with the rear subframe in situ, but because obviously the rear of the repair panel will be inaccessible, how shall I protect it from rust? I've given it a coat of weld through primer... Will this be enough?

Thanks guys!

If you are using the rear subframe to align the new heel board, fine.  However; if you really want to protect the repair afterwards I think you are going to remove the sub frame after you have done the repair.  If you have put in a new heel board it shouldn't take long (no troublesome no longer 'captive' nuts etc.),  but I can't see how else you can get access to protect it.

Other may have easier suggestions.......

Bob

I bought a spray gun with a 900mm pipe and went up through the sill and blasted it as best as you can blind from there with Ensis Fluid.

This is the one I got by Sealey http://www.ebay.co.u...=item51aee2cebc

Thanks for your replies! I think what I'll do is spray some underseal up to about an inch from where I'm going to weld on the panel, then weld that puppy in, then get an extension wand and spray down into the welded area, followed by putting feet up with a beer... How's that for a slice of fried gold?

So, as described, here's what happened...

Back of heel board coated in weld through...

..As well as front minus an inch of clean metal...

...2 coats of underseal on the back of heel board minus an inch to avoid welding onto it. For some reason I got a stripe of moist aerosol and it sort of spattered...

F40F2188-8937-40B6-AF59-A57D7AC14E01-766

...Heel board offered up...

109C08D9-837C-455E-B6B5-9A61DCFE03A9-766

...And welded in...

0C8DD2A6-F76B-45B2-92ED-2DE9732FA67D-766

I'm reasonably pleased with the result, a bit more penetration would have been nice... but I've had a glimpse at the back and there are signs of penetration so hey-ho...

That's all for now folks!

For future reference, if you need to spray down into a confined space, buy one of the thingy's I posted a link to earlier, then when it arrives and you realize it doesn't fit onto the aerosol can, take the end off the tube thingy, heat it with a lighter, and push it onto the top of the can. When you're done, straighten a coat hanger, put some masking tape on the end, and dip it in paintbrush cleaner before forcing it through the pipe to clean it.
