Hello Experts,

I realise this topic has been done to death but after reading the faq's I'm not much wiser.

I have standard steel wheels with 145 70 12 tyres fitted at present.

I would like to fit wider tyres if possible without using spacers or modifying bodywork.

Can I fit 155 or 165 section tyres? Would they be 155 70 12, 165 70 12 or do they need to be lower profile i.e 60?

I would like to buy some Rover minilite style alloys which I think are the same size as the standard steel wheels 4.5 would the same tyre options apply?

I'd welcome any advice on this.

Regards

Mike.

You can use 165/60 r12

145/70 r12 are mostly used as winter tyres

155/070 x 12 don't fit at all well. They rub on the inner wings and alter the gearing as well.

If a wider section tyre is used, it must be a lower profile, so either 145/70 x 12 or 165/60 x 12.

Thanks for your replies and some valuable information.

Looks like the 165 60 12 's are the ones to get. I think they were the size fitted to the Cabrio version.

I used .....    http://www.miata.net...e/tirecalc.html

And came up with the same conclusion - I think I settled on 165 65 12 assuming it's available, if not the 165 60 12 is available... :-)
