i have a 1974 mark 3 and am currently replacing the front end, i purchased a one at a show sunday and was assured it was for models up to 1976, my mate has a 1978 cooper shell hes working on with me, i've had a look and can't see any major differences, can anyone shed a bit of light on the differences? and if it is the wrong panel can i still use it. ( i bought mine with the front end and wings removed so i have nothing to refer to)

I don't think there is a 78 cooper.

There were lots of detailed changes over the years/models.

I think the main one as far as you are probably concerned will be how the tear drop mounts fit at the front - cant think off-hand what changed in 76 to make the panel only suitable for up to that year.

But provided it isn't for pre 1970 it should be OK

may be a 1275???? if not a cooper

thanks for the help, do you think i will get away with just buying the tear drop mounts? i have contacted the guy i bought it off and he's pretty sure it was just a rubber bush and washer?

Main differences in saloon front panels is, upto 1964 has full skirt, 1965-1976 has brake cooling cut outs in skirt, then 1976 on is for rubber mounted subframe, then other than this the cooper s has a different stiffener to allow fitment of an oil cooler, but a later front panel can be converted to fit earlier cars if subframe mounting points are changed over.
