Have you released the lower exhaust clamp before reattaching the manifold to downpipe clamp. If there is no movement on this then everything will be under tension.
Also check your top engine steady. if this is worn it can also affect the clamp.

As above. Check engine wobbling. If it does, you might need new bushes for the engine steadies as mine did this and was the root of all my manifold blowing evils.

I always found that breaking exhaust joint was down to worn engine steadies also.

Are you using exhaust paste and new doughnuts ?

Another option would be to get a better clamp, like the newer v-clamps.

I have not seen a cast clamp since about 1975. I do agree that they are better, but the pressed clamps are ok if everything is fitted properly. What I would do is to loosen all the exhaust mounts, including the two on the rear subframe, so it is held in place but free to move. Then I would jack up the exhaust tightly against the manifold (jack close to the bend at the bottom), apply a small amount of paste externally around the joint, wrap a strip of ali foil round the joint once, then fit the clamp and tighten.
Then do up all the mounts, working from the front backwards. The fromt mount will have some space between it and the bracket on the transmission, which must be packed with largish washers.
But before that, I would change all bushes in the top and bottom steadies, as they tend not to last as long as an exhaust, and will be due for changing. It is rather important that they are in good order, and the engine is sitting in its proper position, before connecting the exhaust.
