can anybody help me please?????

please be gentle with me this is my first ever post on a forum! Been reading posts on here for over 12 months now.

Am in the process of cutting the rust out of my daughters mini, have decided to flip the front end, using metal panels.

I am trying to do it the same way as Sammy Witte, on u tube, but cant get the hinges to work properly. :(

Have all the same gear, but it keeps on pinching the bonnet. Has anybody else done this? If so , any tips greatly appreciated. Or is there anyone out there in my area who has done this? (northants area)

I would class myself as fairly practical, but this is just doing my head in , and now the neighbours!!!

Look at my project page Baghdad to Bolton, I've just flipped mine and may give you an idea. I don't know how Sammy White has done it, I flipped mine up towards the windscreen, is it like that?

Can you explain your problem a little more. The hinges have to be mounted straight so you have to make up some angle metal otherwise the hinge will not work properly. It's quite hard to explain. Is your bonnet pinching at the scuttle end? Are your wings pinching at the top of the A panel?

Hi, i've had a look at your pages dave . Top job mate you've done loads.you say your thought process takes longer, but its still better than mine.

i've already tried squaring up the hinges with some spacers my neighbour made for me,but still could'nt get them to work. i spotted your box section on yours ,can you remember what size it was it looks about 40mm to me ? Also yours are bmw hinges ,do you know which model they came off ? mine are audi 80 ,i have some more coming from the bay of E that are the same model but look a different design( actually more like yours).

So mine at the moment, the wings are pinching the bonnet at the scuttle end. what seems to be happening is that as the hinges rise they rotate. the one on the drivers wing rotates clockwise and the one on the passenger wing rotates anti-clock.i can make them go the other way by changing the spacers around. I just can't get them to go straight. i have levelled up the car and been using my laser level to square up the hinges. I think i will use box section as you have because it looks a lot sturdier.Any thoughts though would be appreciated.

good luck with the paint prep.

cheers, barry.

ps just read your post again, when its closed everything sits fine and nothing is pinching the a panel.

I'm pretty sure the hinges are BMW E36 boot hinges. The box section is 40mm as you say and is solid. The problem I had was I got everything lined up and had perfect gaps, I tac welded everything in place, I went to flip it open and I'd put it all under mega tension and it just would sit right or close correctly. It took me a good week of fettling to get things right. Then I had the problem with the bonnet and that was a new nightmare. You just have to keep at it and you will get there. I had to put the angled steel on so that the hinge would sit straight otherwise it would have pulled the wing in at a strange angle.
