im not sure you can. do you mean engine running but car not moving? or everything off?

Its not all too accurate but it can be done. You need a dti gauge and a good eye on the timing marks.
Basically you use the dti gauge to measure maximum lift on the camshaft of cylinder 1 at a given engine position and relate it to crankshaft position which can be done using the timing marks. You only really need to take off the rocker cover to do this but it will be fiddly.

Anyway you need a true TDC point, the factory timing marks are not that accurate

yes , engine is in and is running, it just seems a bit flat , checked all the usual things was just going to see what it was at.im not sure you can. do you mean engine running but car not moving? or everything off?

The quick & easy way to check it to within a degree or two is as follows:
Take the radiator out, remove the front pulley & the timing cover.
Take the rocker cover off and remove the plugs. Fit a timing protractor to the end of the crankshaft.
Use a pencil down bore no.1 and bring no.1 to TDC as accurately as you can, i.e. until the pencil sticks out the plug hole the most.
Set the protractor to the TDC mark against a point on the block.
Fit a DTI onto the inlet valve on whichever cylinder is firing and rotate the crankshaft until the DTI is reading at its maximum. Read off the degrees on the protractor. That is your cam timing figure to about +/-2 degrees.
If you want it more accurate you will need to use a more sophisticated method of finding absolute TDC on 1 & 4.

The dti can be used on the device placed on the piston, rotate to crank anticlockwise untill the falls off note the reading, rotate the crank clockwise until the dti indicate the point of drop off now half those readings and thats your true TDC
