I'll explain what I mean, or alteast try to;

I've always loved Mini's and when I was 16 the plan was to get a Mini as a first car, but when I turned 17 it was much cheaper to buy a bus ticket to work than insure a £300 car for £2900 :/

And the only thing stopping me commit to getting one was the space in the car, however was at a festival yesterday with friends, and a friend of a friend had the most beautiful mini I had ever seen, He took me for a spin in it and I had honestly never had so much fun in a car. Also the space inside wasn't half as bad as I'd imagined. So now I've decided to take the plunge and get a mini.

I was a bit drunk but i think he said it was his dads Mini Mayfair and he dropped a 1275 GT into it.

Just need a bit of buying advice, I hear theres alot of rusting issues with Mini's so is it really a case of you get what you pay for? Paying more means you get more car?

I'm not too fussed about trims etc as i hope to refurb it all myself, I just want a good solid base, preferably with a 1275GT :P

Thanks in advance and hopefully soon I might pop up on the project thread

Buy the car with the best body you can, as other issues are easier to fix.

Avoid cars with oversills.

Take someone with you that knows what they're looking at.

And, more money doesn't mean a better car!

As above the amount you pay really is no guarantee of how solid a mini is. You can sometimes pick up a solid enough example with no MOT for a few hundred quid, but equally people sell complete rot boxes for many thousands as well. Don't get too hung up on a GT engine specifically though, genuine GT engines are pretty few and far between these days, what's more there were a fair few other 1275's fitted to later models that were slightly better spec any way (i.e. Rover Cooper, Metro & MG metro etc.)
