I just bought a 1990 998cc Rover Mini Mayfair with an upgraded 1275cc Metro GT engine! (look at the picture and tell me what you think)

I think im in love with it already, and I haven't even started to restore it yet!

over the next few weeks and months I will be looking advice from the Mini Community on many important decicions such as:

what size/style of wheels and matching arches?

when re-spraying her, should I leave her cream, or go a different colour?

replace worn carpets with standard black or nice racey red?

add spotlights or not?

do I install hi-los?

etc

im looking forward to getting advice from you lovely people over the next while, (if anyone has any advice to give now don't be shy)

Thanks in advance for all you help guys

Wheels: Personally I prefer 10" minilite wheels for the classic/retro look and also because I find that the classic mini handles so much better on 10" wheels. The downside is that 10" wheels don't fit over the standard 8.4" brake setup and so a brake conversion is required to fit them.

Arches: All down to personal preference, but for me group 2 arches give that classic retro look and look great on a white car with a black roof. (see pic of my car below - although it's actually on 12's not 10's!!)

Colour: I'm quite a big fan of the white with black roof colour scheme. From the photo yours actually appears to be one of the Rover "White Diamond" colours as opposed to cream (might just be the photo though). Old English White is slightly more cream in colour than the white that you appear to have and is without doubt my favorite classic mini colour.

Carpets: I'd stick with black persoanly, as it complements most interiors and colour schemes, should you want to change these in the future. You can't say the same for Red carpets, plus red shows the dirt more and isn't so easy to keep clean.

Spots: I prefer without spots, but then I had four spots fitted to my mini for years, before I decided that I actually preferred it without them. That's the beauty of classic mini's though, you can change them as you go along if your taste in something changes. I also found that spots get in the way when you want to remove the grille and work on the engine.

Hi-Lo's: I have two minis and have never fitted adjustable suspension to either. I'm more than happy with the standard ride height though, others here swear by hi-lo's.

By the way, are you sure about your engine? I've heard of a 1275 MG Metro engine and 1275 GT engine, but never a 1275 Metro GT engine!

with regards to the wheels, I have a set of 6x10 ultralites lined up, how would these suit the standard arches already on my mini , or are group 2 the way to go? also what size wheels fit over the standard brakes?

I was maybe thining the red carpets would look eyecatching and abit more sporty, but since im trying to capture the classic look, I think you are right in sating black would be best

Il maybe let her go for a while without the spots, then if im looking for an other aspect of the mini I will maybe think of buying them

are the Hi-Los any benefit?
