;D

Hello all, I am one of those poor souls who is mini-less.....at the moment.

I have been looking forward to buying a classic mini for some time and now it looks like I might be able to afford one (family comes first, mini comes second.....time to come second). It will be my 40th birthday present and I can't wait.

The only problem is, I want it to be older than I am. O_O  That means pre 1972.

In summary:

1, Yes, I am now officially old

2, Yes, I am an evil daddy. I do pinch my kids biscuits....and I tickle them.....and I eat their easter eggs.....and I play with their Christmas presents. In fact, when my son got a scalextric set a number of years ago, I bought myself a scalextric mini just so I can beat him with his modern Lemans car........Evil or what............. but I lost......badly.... >_<  I am not really that good at being Evil........I can't even find the biscuits now. They hide them from me...........got a little off topic where was I?

3, Oh yes, I LOVE MINI's.

I would love a 1275 GT but I have not been able to find one in my price range that didn't need 10 times my budget to fix it, I think anything pre 1972 would be great. I am good with the spanners and enjoy having oil in strange places. I have not really done body work apart from a little rattle can painting so I may be on here lots of times asking for advice. I hope you nice people will be able to help me out as I can be a bit thick at times. :mmkay:.

Let the mini hunt begin.........

Hi and welcome to TMF.

As you probably realise, anything pre-73 (soon to be pre-74) is road tax exempt. Cars of that age therefore tend to attract a bit of a premium and because it's incredibly easy to change the identity of a classic mini, it's become all too common for pre-73/tax exempt identities to be illegally assigned to later models, in order to avoid paying for road tax. Unfortunately if you don't know the subtle differences between the different marks/ages of classic mini, then you could end up paying way over the odds for an illegal/non genuine pre-73 model.

Fortunately there is a wealth of knowledge here from experts who can tell a so called "log book special" from a mile off, so if in doubt then post a few pictures up of any car that you're interested in buying and let them cast their eye over it first!!

Happy Birthday & Good luck with your search!!

Hi guys,

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Hi Dave,

That is the sort of information I really need. I know that tax exempt minis go for a premium but I had no idea people were passing off pre 1973 minis as tax exempt. The aim was to get a car at least as old as me, the bonus was that they are tax exempt but now I know I will certainly be asking advice from you guys if the cars I look at are genuine......I only wish I was tax exempt at 40. :D

If I can find one in my price range that is genuine tax exempt then great. I would love an original looking car with some minor mods but if I need to go for a younger model I will be spending the extra cash on a one off special. After all, any mini is great.

I have found a couple of cars for sale on the forum. I guess it would be sensible to look here first before looking for an Ebay bargain.

Many thanks for the advice.

Glenn
