Hello Mini Forum!

I have recently acquired my first mini! A 1989 Mini Mayfair in Henley Blue, One previous owner (a 94 year old woman) and has 30k on the clock and the engine runs like a dream. There is just some minor bodywork issues which can be fixed eventually but have just been rubbed down and rust protected for now.

So I am 18 now, turning 19 on the 25th July. We live in Barrow in Furness, and have to go through Ulverston to get to the motorway and such, and this mini was visible from the main road, my dad remembers when it was first put there seen as he is very keen on minis, (more on that further down). A local club owner then bought it from the 94 year old, and never used it but instead advertised it through the club so i snapped up the opportunity to own the mini that i had been seeing from the road for longer than i can remember. I still can't get my head around the fact that i now own what i once dreamed of owning, (sad really).

My dad owns his own mini club, (Mini Special Register) not sure if anyone will know of it, as it is a bit old.

Him and my mother have owned over 170 mini's between the two of them. For aslong as i can remember i have wanted a mini because my childhood memories were of minis, my dad working on them in the garage, going out in them and nothing beats the fun of going over a bridge and hitting your head on the roof in a mini haha.

So aswell as my '89 Mayfair we also have another mini in the family, which belongs to my dad, this is a 1978 Mini 1000. He has had the car for approximately 2 and half years and is about finished. The change is incredible, it has gone from a stock orange mini to an almond green MK1 rep which is a beautiful example and is a real credit to him and he really has done himself proud.

Unfortunately, one bad point about his mini is that his engine turned out to have minor piston damage and there wasn't enough compression in one of the cylinders, at first it moved 4 feet in each direction and then seized, he managed to fix that but then we found the piston damage, which appears to have made a groove in the cylinder head.

Needless to say i had to put a padlock on my bonnet ;) haha I think i was lucky because my engine is has a verto clutch and has a servo so he didn't want it in the end.

So...he ordered a recon engine from Mini Sport, with all the bells and whistles, yeah, you could say that there was a cheaper way of doing it but doing it this way he got to choose what components were used, and he knows that nothing is going to go wrong with this engine.

We will be having a club stand at the National Mini Show at Stanford Hall on the 15th September this year, keep an eye out and you will see my dads MK1 rep and my Mayfair sat proudly next to it.

Anyway, if you got this far, thanks for reading :)

(also it is early in the morning so forgive me on grammar etc haha)

Scott

Looks cracking. I'm working in barrow for a year and my mini is down in the Midlands. Is there a club worth joining and bringing the car up?

There is a couple I think, but the one i'm most familiar with is Furness Classic Mini Club, which are based in Barrow, there's about 50 members, a couple of them are doing full restorations as we speak and it's a very active club with meets every month at the pub ;) anyway we are on facebook, just search "furness classic mini club"

I think there is also the Cumbria Mini Cruisers but i'm not very familiar with them.
