stand on the brakes and bring the clutch to biting in 1st and reverse - assuming the giblets don't drop out of the gearbox, you'll see.
Normal safety precautions - don't chock the wheels with a toddler etc.

I always heard you had to chock the wheels with a toddler... damn, been doing it wrong all along.
You should also be able to see movement in the subframe mounts if you get someone to jack up the car at the front and watch the heelboard mounts

Just turn the steering side to side and watch the engine (with subframe) move. Actually, it is the body moving with the steering rack since the tyres are on the ground. Mine was pretty bad.
When I was about to remove the tower bolts, with just the force applied to try to loosen the bolts, the heads would flex from side to side significantly. The bolts were tight but the rubber mounts were so distorted that the bolts were not clamping the body at all.

what jack up one side and do this, can you be more specific on the procedure thanks

Well I would assume if your subframe mounts are failing or failed then jacking the car up at the front will force the bottom of the subframe where it mounts to the toeboard (not heelboard my typo) to flex outwards, just jacking up the subframe where is normal on a mini should show this (it did when my toeboard rubber mounts failed)
