Model : 1987 Mini Advantage

Pre-Verto Clutch

Okay, so for the last few weeks i have started to wonder if i need my clutch replacing.

To start off, i understand that wheel spinning isn't something i aim to do, but when i come to pull off fast, my clutch does not immediately engage and does seem to slip, also when changing gears say from 2nd to 3rd, if im trying to get a quick transition, there is a small amount of time where the clutch is not completely engaged and i have to pull of the accelerator for it to engage nicely.

Also, im not sure whether the weather plays a part on this (our hot summer so far!), but after driving for about half an hour, the oil pressure drops slightly, only a fraction,  and time to time if i drop the gears and use engine breaking to slow down, the clutch starts to slip after slightly?

This isn't an all time occurrence at the moment, and will accelerate at a nice rate without slipping, but its something that has started to happen more often.

Just want to note that the position of the pedal is in the middle, and has been adjusted to try and change this problem but still the same is happening.

I have wondered if a more powerfull clutch is needed and whether a race clutch is worth it?

Also i have been wondering if its possible to get an oil cooler for the engine and if that could have a difference in the summer?

Thanks for reading and look forward to replies!

Thanks,

Jamie!

I would have thought your 87 car would have had a verto clutch? As I understood it from 82 on was verto. If its been modified to non verto check there is play on the clutch adjuster bolt at the very top of the lever betweel lever and adjuster bolt of 0.50mm

You dont say how long the clutch has been in there? but its either worn to the point where it is starting to slip, or the primary oil seal has started to weep and allow oil into the clutch, is there any signs of oil coming out the very bottom of the clutch housing where the split pin is? if so there is oil in the clutch housing and if its not that severe its leaking out the hole either way its a strip down and investigate. Either way when the clutch is being replaced its a good chance to fit a new primary oil seal at the same time.

hey thanks for the reply, well its a D reg, and pretty sure its non verto, with the long arm, but it could be a minor oil leak into the clutch, maybe with the oil getting warm in this weather its seaping through? but since has seemed to be ok, ill do some checks.

The clutch has done 100,000 from what i know, i bought it with 40K on the clock, but it was a re build, with '60s clocks, so not sure how accurate they were, its now on 110K.

Ill keep my eye on it, :)

 Thanks :)
