So i went to change the Oil and the sump plug thread has been stripped. I have the sump plug out no problem..
Has anybody used the minispares self tapered oversized sump plug to fix this?
Or is the best option to helicoil it?
Many Thanks,
Iain.

Theres been a few threads on this recently, I think it is best to use helicoil it as the minispares oversized tapered one can crack the sump as it is bigger than the hole. (?)

Helicoil is the long term repair and a better long term repair and you get to keep the magnetic original sump plug pickup, if you do use the tapered one be careful they dont tighten all the way in and cut there own thread so insert like you do with a tap, cut 1/4 turn-wind back and so on. If you keep winding they will split the alloy casing

Helicoil would be your best bet.

Thanks for the replies people!
My brother is bringing his set of taps home from work, and we will fit a bigger magnetic sump plug

Be sure to take care to tap it exactly perpendicular to the sealing surface, or it will leak. That is the only real problem with retapping or fitting a helicoil. The other way is to make an ali top hat bush, in a lathe so the thread is exactly perpendicular, and weld it in, having drilled the hole out a bit first.
But whatever you do, I recommend that you get the bonded rubber seal from a modern car (I think the Ford Focus one is the right size), or a Dowty washer, which is similar, and use that instead of the copper washer. You get a good seal with much less torque, and if the thread is slightly wonky it may still seal.
