Hi all,

I know this topic has been covered many times, but ages ago I bought a 7.5" conversion set from minispares and have only just got round to fitting it.

I've found that the discs are binding here:

And also look at the difference in space between my old 8.4" discs and my new 7.5" discs:

I have this problem on both sides of the car, I've tried swapping the discs over, same problem.

I know that 7.5" discs are a thinner diameter on the inside anyway but:

Is it simply a case of getting some replacement 7.5" discs and hoping that the casting gave enough space during that run, or do I really need to get some new hubs?

Any guidance appreciated,

Thanks,

Simon.

I just did the conversion yesterday. Just put the hub in a vice and use a grinder to remove the thick layer of rust from the cylindrical part which goes inside the disc. works a treat  :D

Might help, but the hubs in question don't look particularly rusty and as said above Cooper S hubs were a different shape.  Some discs bind, others don't.

They shouldn't be rusty. He's just spent the last 6 months cleaning every last nut and bolt!.

As above - remove rust/crud from the hub carrier - they WILL fit.

They're one of the only things I haven't touched LOL. Still rusty.

I've just filed off all the rust and stuff where the hub carriers are binding, and still nothing. It's not like they're binding by a tiny amount; when I do the castle nut up just past hand tight, they're pretty much solid stuck.

I just rang minispares who told me to post them off to him in Harrogate so that he can check them on his jig setup, but that's miles away and postage will be expensive and stuff so I'm still not too sure what to do.

You can either get the outer edge of the hub machined to Cooper S spec, or swap some discs around until you find some that clear.  This is just one of those things that relies on tolerances of parts from various different manufactures and sometimes they stack up.

Yeah :)

I took the discs to minispares, who brought out two different pairs to check the inside measurement, both the same as mine.

So we're now assuming it's my hubs.

Now it's either just a case of machining back the inside of the discs, or filing back the outside of the hubs!

Thanks for all the help,

Simon.

Work the hubs, otherwise you will have to do this every time you get a new disc.  It's only the very nose section that needs to be adjusted and all it carries is the oil seal so it's not hugely loaded.  The Cooper S hubs have a very pronounced step at the end, to probably about 4mm back from the edge.

Never mind filing - small angle grinder is the way...

Found a picture on the Mini Mania website, the step is a lot deeper than I remembered!
