I have a new well second hand tank for my mini 1990. I wanted a tank with the fuel filler unleaded restrictor in the neck of the tank. Now the new tank has a grey colored item which I have found out is a fuel tank breather trap. My old one does not have one just the breather pipe going through the boot floor. Firstly could someone explain its purpose to me and secondly do I need this on the new tank or can I just remove it and connect my vent pipe as normal.

Many thanks

Probably something like a valve to prevent fuel syphoning out in the event of a rollover or similar accident.

My 92 carb'd italian jobs got one of these too, no idea what it is, but I think the return pipe from the carbon canister comes back to it, I think.

I believe its a valve that only allows the tank to breathe when its the right way up. I the car turns over in an accident the valve closes stopping fuel from leaking out. I had a vacuum in my tank every time I opened it until I realised someone had put this valve in upside down. Turned it the right way up and the tank could breathe again.
