I had a problem with my car running and suddenly petrol pouring out of the bottom of the mini which looks like its from the over flow.

 

I hasve rebuild the carb, and got it so the choke return properly.... but now I have noticed its was running rubbish again, and when I got out there was fuel all over the floor again. now the choke underneath is retuning fine..... why is it coming out of the overflow?

 

the pipe in the picture with yellow arrow.... leads to a metal pipe and it connects to nothing... just pours petrol... any help appreciated... I want it MOT'd

under there where the 2 pipes are is a float, it will be stuck open so allowing the fuel to pump out.

how do you know if it moving freely, I can push it up and down but how do I know?

 

hows best to clean it please, and also is down open or up if that makes sense.

long time since ive had one of these carbs, but theres a needle valve. the float rises with petrol and shuts off the valve so no more petrol enters.

 

if this doesnt happen, the petrol keeps pumping from tank and exits via the overflow.

Also check the float isn't holed. Take it out and shake it to see if it has petrol in. The needle valve is a more common problem but this has happened twice on my MGB GT and both times it was a holed float.

if ithas got a hole in it do I buy a replacement or a bit of fibreglass over the hole?

Replacement ones are only a few quid and their density is critical so its best to replace.

I had this problem the other week, its a sticking needle valve as stated above in my case but could also be a punctured float stopping it from "floating" both the needle valve and the float are available from mini-spares, good idea to change the fuel bowl gasket also again from mini spares

change them as mentioned above.  to strip the lid its a case of taking off the pipes, unscrewing the lid and removing the float pin(with a small punch or similar) to remve the valve it will be an 8mm spanner or socket from memory.

Thanks guys, I was gonna get one of these but the lid on mine is different as it has two pipes? is my carb called something different ?>

Have a look first, could just be dirt unde the needle valve stopping it closing.

ive just taken it apart.

 

the float seems fine no petrol in it, the needle all seemed fine but im not sure what im looking for really, seems to go up a little bit ok ?

Give it a clean, refit it all, run the engine again with the overflow pipe disconnected from the carb and see if has cured the problem. If it is working correctly the petrol should be cut off by fthe float rising and the needle valve shutting off the flow. If all ok refit overflow pipe.

If float is intact and the problem is no cured by cleaning needle valve and its seating then it probably needs a new needle valve. Hope you get it soted.
