popping on the overrun is usually caused by the ignition being retarded a bit too much, thats what i've found with my car anyway. But if your exhausts black then i'd say its probably too rich aswell. your best bet would be to take it for a rolling road tune up, whereabouts are you and someone might be able to recommend a decent place local to you.

Take out the spark plugs and look at them they should be a brownish colour.
If they are really sooted up then it could be running rich.

Then check you air filter, make sure it is clean and not sooted up as this will make it run rich.

To lean of the carb

Take off the air filter
and under the carb you will see a brass nut, if you pull out the choke you will see part of the carb system drop, the brass nut is at the top.

turn this anti clockwise to lean of the mixture.

Take off the 3 screws that hold the dashpot on, you will see the jet in the middle of the carb, if you fully close this, ie turn it anticlock wise until you cant turn it anymore and the jet is flush to the surface of the body, you then turn it clockwise 2 1/2 - 3 turns and that shoud be about the right mixture.

ie turn it 15 - 18 flats of the nut

its different on a HIF44 though dude, the mixture screw is on the drivers side of the carb kind of underneath/to the side of the fuel in pipe. principles still the same though i believe.

yeah thats right thought it was a bit odd as manual says opposite, anyway sorted it and the timing so it is running quite sweet now, sounds so different, really nice exhaust note!
