I've got some rust, under paintwork unfortunately - the guy who sold it to me covered it up, by the wheel arches on both sides of my mini. How would you recommend I deal with it?

Front or back? is it very bad or just surface rust? Give the areas a good wire brush/sand to get rid of the rust, If it's not too bad, mask off the area and give it a coat of primer and paint. If it creates a hole then it will need to be welded, then repainted.

How dyou recommend painting without leaving an obvious patch that's been repainted?

Also I think it's just surface but I'm not sure - it's covered with paint!

Pics would help a lot, chances are its not just surface. Minis have a habit of rusting from the inside out.

There is some good advice on there already from AVV IT amongst others. A panel is needed, rear quarter needs checking, you may get away with it you may not. Front end needs looking at before it gets too bad.

Just seen the pictures and there will be quite a few panels to replace I'm afraid.
The rear quarters certainly the right hand one, the l/h might be saved. The A panels are shot and need replacing. The front panel is crusty as well so that will need to be replaced as well.
The A panel damage will have spread to the A post flange the A panel wraps around so some more work there.
Sorry not what you want to hear but better to be honest rather than just say grind it back it will be ok, it won't.

Ok cheers guys. I'd like to keep it on the road another 11 months (that's when my insurance runs out!) and then do a complete restore summer 2014. will it survive without too much damage til then?

If you are going to do a complete resto then it will not matter too much . The big thing is once you start looking / poking around you will find more.
The car will no doubt look quite scabby in 11 months time but there is not much you can really do without disturbing the paintwork.
