its simple theres not enough power to spin the starter at the required speed thus it does not fly backwards.. also is it even possible to fit this motors the wrong way? can it be turning the wrong way?

 

by the way that ring gear and its casing looks like that of an A+ engine so you should be using a pre-engaged starter which has a tube like solenoid fitted onto it..

Right so this afternoon, i hooked the car up to a nice skoda, to jump and charge the battery. It would still only turn the engine once every so often. So i removed a spark plug to lessen the CR and it turned fine. Put the spark plug back in and it kept doing the same thing.
Disconnected the leads from the skoda and tried it again. The engine fired on the first turn of the key! Then proceeded to fire up another 4 or 5 times on the first turn of the key.
I then left the car alone for 10 minutes, went to turn the key, and its back to not engaging again

Clean everything up from battery to starter to ensure you've got maximum turbo at the starter. Suggest you put the jump leads carefully  close to the engine, -ve on the front sub or the block somewhere and +ve on the solenoid connection from the battery (do take real care doing this) and then try.

Also put a multimeter across the big terms on the solenoid and crank it - there should be no noticeable voltage showing on the meter, if there is then the solenoid contacts could be a bit past there best.

 

I really don't trust your battery that much either? What cold cranking volts do you have?

Yeah i tried that running it off a different battery. Still just span and only occasionally engaged. Yeah im gonna get a new battery next week. It says 60amp

Also ive been doing some research. I have a verto clutch set up, meaning ive got a verto suited flywheel. Ive read that with a verto set up, then a pre-engaged motor is needed. Is this the case?

If you have a verto clutch then the later cars with the verto assembly did indeed have a verto flywheel/ringear. but there are a few going about with verto flywheels and inertia starters and inertia ring gears

 

You can tell which yours is by marking one tooth with white paint and counting the teeth inertia is 107 and pre-engaged is 129 but Minispares lists it as 127? either way if it more than 107 its a pre-engaged

I'm not sure it makes too much difference and one well know spares supplier lists them as interchangeable (but I'd take that with a pinch of salt after reading the rest of the tech advice on their website).

It's possible that a pre-engaged ring gear with an inertia starter might be a be tight for the pinion to throw in....?

 

Just swapping the battery over in the boot won't necessarily help - you need to check the starter wiring as already suggested to make sure you have good cranking volts at the starter - until you do that everything is just speculation.

Yeah ive connected a battery pretty much straight to the starter motor with the same results as when the battery is in situ. I'll get a multi meter on it and check for resistance, continuity and voltage drop.

I should probably add this is in an early 80's metro which ive recently found out has had the engine swapped from an "80's something" mini

i'd suggest you get a pre-engaged starter and use that.. after all if you have a verto ring gear then its meant to have a pre-engaged starter motor.. why not just get a new one i doubt they cost oo much and it will last forever :)
