OK

I am new to the site but ever since I can remember I have always wanted to own a MK1 Mini that is as original as possible.

I have spotted one that needs a bit of work and wanted someone to help.

I have added some pics.

It is listed as a 1968 but they have said it is a mk1 I thought the change was 67` does it look like a MK1

Please any advise would be very helpfull

That car was 1st registered on 01/02/1968 so could have sat in a compound for a bit. Its a 998 Austin Mini.

The last time it was legally on the road was Jan 1995, so its been of the road for while.

The main difference externally is the grille and a larger rear window. I would say that's a Mk1 but im sure someone a bit more knowledgeable will confirm either way.

Cheers

1968 is mk2 although that is a mk1 in the pictures apart from the reg plate :shy:

Still, it looks a tidy motor and for its age its held up very well, may i ask how much you (Invested ) in it ? ;D

Yes its a Mk1, quite a few of the last ones were registered quite late on an 67/68 F plate and also the early Mk2's were F reg. It may have been sold off cheaper when new as a last years model range!

"The year letter also previously changed on 1 January each year and meant that car retailers soon started to notice that buyers would tend to wait until the New Year for the new letter to be issued, so that they could get a "newer" car. This led to major peaks and troughs in sales over the year, and to help flatten this out somewhat the industry lobbied to get the scheme changed, so that the change of year letter occurred on 1 August rather than 1 January. This was done in 1967, when "E" suffixes ran only for 6 months from 1 January to 31 July, before "F" suffixes commenced on 1 August."

I hope you have deep pockets as mk1 bits are ridiculous prices now for decent stuff and a 68 car is going to need a lot of work. On the plus side it will be worth the effort but not financially

There is a 1966 grey Mk.1 850 Mini for sale in West End Classics, Somersham, Cambs., which is about 3 miles from me and the asking price is just under £10,000.
It does look good and is in superb condition. They recently sold a green/white 1962 850 for £10,500.

A gander at the Chassis Number would tell you if the car is a Mk1 or Mk2.

I don't have the folder with all this info in with me at the moment but from memory the last Mk1 Austin Saloon was 1067764. Mk2 started at 1068001. It  looks as if the car has received a later 998 engine. I'm sure there are plenty of 848 engines about if originality is required. If it were my car that is what I would like to do. Tartan red always my favourite colour as well!

Offer whatever you want to pay.......if it goes on ebay it will probably fetch far more than you will offer and looks a good original starting point for a Mk1, although as a beginner any Mini restoration is probably going to cost more and take longer than you think!. If it is a 998cc engine thats an added bonus for use on modern roads and it still has the magic wand gearbox so visually everything will look the same as an 850 engine.
