I've read on here that people have painted with a roller?

Can anyone give me more details n this

What paint do you use

How big an area do you work on at a time

Does it need to be heated with a lamp etc to cure

Thanks

As I'm feeling charitable I'll give you the link :P

http://www.theminifo...with-hammerite/

This is the majority of the information collected on TMF, there's also a forum dedicated to the process called "rolled-on" which a google search will get you.

Main points are

  • It's cheap
  • It's SLOW
  • It's easy to repair defects
  • It's SLOW

Most common paint options are either Rustoleum, any kind of topside yacht paint or Dulux trade solvent based. Prices are all about the same, Rusto has the option to mix the colour to anything you want.

I did it as an experiment and it turned out okay but you need space and time (now I sound like the Dr.) where it won't be knocked into etc.

Results aren't bad though:

some Rustoleum stop rust paint, a few quarts and some spirit water to cut the paint with

wet sand paper, 400-600-800-1000-1200-1500 to wet sand between coats of paint

and then whatever brand you want to use to polish the shine back out a few weeks later after the paint has had some time to kick

and a few hrs between layers, to let the paint dry to wet sand to cut the orange peel between layers

u could do 2 layers of paint a day, would take a week or so to get 6-8 thin layers of paint laid down

I plan to do this roll on job 1st part of sept

As a tip, there's no need to sand beyond 600 grit between coats, you're only making enormous extra work for yourself and given the thin depth when roller painting will be taking off almost all you apply.

By spirit water, I'm guessing you mean mineral spirits. Shouldn't require more than about 10% thin just to aid flow.

You will need more than a few hours between coats, 6-8 is possible in warm environments but I'd suggest against sanding between every coat if you're applying 2 a day as the paint will be soft and you'll risk tearing.

Sand in the morning, apply coat, 8 hours drying time then second coat, leave over night and sand the next morning - repeat.

It will allow you build the layers up effectively without removing all your work each time you sand by using too vigorous a sanding regime until the final flatting, which as you say should be left for a good 8 weeks to allow the paint to cure fully.

i have done it with hammerite straight from the tin, just tipped it into a little tray and used a small roller, i wanted it to look crappy and rough as i was making a minature 3 wheel trotter van. it actually turned out a little too neat so i had to distress it afterwards.

if you want to do the rat look thing or cammo etc its brilliant, and quite good fun, get it done in no time and you dont have to take much care over it.

youtube 'rustoleum the right way' follow this exactly but with longer drying times in the uk. Also they mention mineral spirits, this is white spirits to us. Did mine this way. All is fine.

I have just done this to my MX5 which i have just sold. i used a matte cream miltary vehicle paint from Paints 4 trade on ebay and a mini 4" roller with a few foam rollers from a pound shop. got a really good finish from a few feet away and with it being matte no polishing required.

With my new project i have been given 2 litres of ford radient red and 1 litre of hardener. does anyone know if you can roller 2k paint?

If so i guess you just mix 2-1 and apply the same as celly but in a well vented area.

Cheers

Matt
