Hello folks,

I want to paint the stripes on the bonnet rather than use the decal type stickers.

 

Basically what im looking for is the best way to go about painting them in.

 

Some say to spray the whole bonnet in the colour of the stripe and then mask off before spraying the base colour of the car colour (red).

Surely this will affect the tint of the paint colour with the white under the red.....

 

The other method is a little simpler and is to spray the bonnet in the base colour of the rest of the car (red) and then mask off to spray the white stripes on top.... which will leave a slight ridge where the white stripe edge is...

 

So, whats the best method?

 

I don't want to use a lacquer/clear coat on the paintwork, just using 2k paints.

 

Any help is appreciated

the 2nd option, you can flatten the white stripe edge (easy does it!!) and polish the bonnet up

not if you polish the residue off properly

True but you dont have to bother if you lacquer it.

If you don't lacquer then you'll end up with a lip the same as a sticker strip, only more likely to wear as you polish etc. Don't forget about stone chips, as the lacquer should add more protection for the paint!

Vinyl stripes have to ba added AFTER polishing, OEM bonnet stripes have a contrast border which will be discoloured if you pass 3M over it

Added after mopping yes but you will polish the car plenty of times with them fitted (at least you should) and it leaves a line of polish that has to be cleaned up. Painting them then lacquering over it is the best way of doing it.
