About to fit the headlining in my mini, decided that double sided tape is better after many a bad experience with wet glue.
The question is which tape do I use that I can get hold of locally?

Here are a couple I'm looking at:

http://groceries.asd...ct/910000477514

3M Scotch - double sided tape

Its 1.2cm wide and comes on a roll of 11.4Meters - £2.00

http://www.diy.com/n...?skuId=13169410

Diall - multi purpose double sided tape

Its 3.6cm wide and comes on a roll of 25Meters - £5.98

http://www.diy.com/n...4?skuId=9262173

B&Q - double sided tape

Its 3.8cm wide and comes on a roll of 5Meters - £4.48

Which one do I go for? I am edging more towards the Diall tape but is it too wide?
Or should I go for the narrower 3M Scotch tape?

Many thanks Nat

Number plate tape works well.

Failing that, what are your problems with spray adhesive? It works amazingly, sticks time and time again whilst you line the headlining up and simply wipes off bodywork that you dont want it to be with no effort

See I would use number plate tape but I can find it cheap enough and on a roll, halfords want £2 for about 6 inches worth.

Well I've never been able to get any kind of liquid adhesive to stick the headliner to the body, it always ends up loosing tention before I can get a seal on it whilst it drys. Never been able to wipe it off body work, ended up using tardis to get any excess glue off. And it bleeds into the headlining leaving a nasty stain.

I would advise going to wickes or b and q or something similar and get the carpenter double sided tape it is not too expensive and will hold well. It may have some sort of special name but they norm hold well

You need to use adhesive (either spray or spreadable), tape won't work (well it might work, but it won't work well).

Ditto. Need to use adhesive. Neoprene type is what the factory used.

The factory changed to double sided tape at some point in the mid '90s around when BMW took over (and presumably decided the BL standard fit glue stains on the headlining weren't acceptable).  I use tape, I know other people who use tape.  it sticks just fine, my current taped in headliner hasn't moved in 12 years.  The glue doesn't hold it in normal use, the glass seals do.  The tape only has to keep in in place until the rubbers are fitted.  I don't use anything more fancy than normal domestic Selotape double sided.  Be careful not to leave an edge of it visible around the seals because it can't just be cleaned back like glue.

What you want is some double sided foam tape (it's all the same stuff just with a different name/price tag) even a 5 meter roll from poundland will do, witch is also the stuff I used to do my first headlining 8 years ago.

I can vouch for this stuff http://www.speedspor...e-sided-tape-13

We use it at work ( Rolls Royce motorcars) for all kinds of applications, amazingly strong, plus we put all are adhesives though tough environmental and climatic tests so it will stand the test of time.

Hopper.

Well I managed to fit the headliner perfectly with double sided tape. This is the stuff I used.

http://www.diy.com/n...?skuId=13169410

£5.98 from B&Q for a 25M roll, stupidly sticky and worked a treat. Ended up holding the headliner in place without using clamps or seals, of course I had to fit the seals in order to fit the windows though. And if anyone is thinking about doing this job on their own, DONT!

Its muche easier with two people, one inside the car and one outside. That way you can keep an eye on everything and get a perfect job!!!

I've looked at the excellent blog post on Newton Commercials site for tips. Did you take your seats out ? I've got this job to do on my 40 as a previous owner couldn't hold a cigarette still and has repeatedly managed to burn the headlining. Got a new one at Bingley and going to use fitting it as an excuse to fit a heated screen and replace the back one too, as a couple of lines of the element are knackered...

Carpet tape.  Epic

is that a good or a bad "epic"  ? I don't see an issue using good quality 3M automotive doublesided tape. Strong, controllable and should avoid all possibilities of it staining the headlining overtime....

Cheap, nasty stuff - same as anything buy cheap, buy twice, and I only want to fit a headlining once !
