Hi everybody,

Having noticed rust bubbles starting to form under my windscreen rubber, I have decided during the winter to take on repairs all around the body to protect it once again.

So my first question is, can I use the earlier windscreen seal instead of the later wider seal? As I have heard that the later seal traps the water underneath it, causing rust to form. Would this have any benefit or am I better off using the later wider seal?

Cheers in advance

i was told the larger one protects it more from rotting. not sure if its true tho.

I heard the opposite! Supposedly the later seal traps the water underneath the seal, meaning it cannot escape and rots out the scuttle

Well, if you think about it a narrower screen seal is less likely to trap water as it sits before the groove on the windscreen panel, whereas the later seal covers past that lip shall we say, this means water can get into that groove and sit there and rust. Though wider seals often seal the screen in better due to the extra coverage. So are less likely to leak...

Do the earlier seals leak at all? I would rather the scuttle not rot to be honest but if the earlier seal leaks like a sieve, then later style it is

Nope, just in theory, a wider one would stop it better. I also think narrower screen seals look nicer...

Well I'll wait for a few more opinions but I think I'll be going for a narrow seal! Cheers!

just out of interest... late or wide? :) i am having the same predicament at the moment and would rather have the extra 3 bucks back to spend on other seals.

I always found the wider ones trap water and rust out your scuttle. I repaired a mates car which had a wide rubber. It rotten the scuttle in 3 places.

He has now put a early normal size rubber in.

It's well known in the later minis, and always best to put a early thinner rubber if you get the chance

Plus it look better.

And if you can get a windscreen fitted to do it. They will seal it properly so it won't leak. Worth every penny.

Also Phoenix rubbers do them seam less or off the reel, the off the reel is a better quality rubber than the seamless ones.
