Hi all

I have finally got the new engine in the mini and it runs  :D

A long story but the timing cover on the 998 didn't have any timing indicators ( I threw the original one away by mistake and ended up using the one of the old Pre A plus) so it was only ever a best guess, but it ran fine.

The new engine has a new timing cover with the indicator "teeth" but on checking the megajolt & strobe, I seem to be around 4 degrees out even with the advance in the program set to the max 5 deg.

I need to take the rad out for some fettling (have a new metal fan which is catching slightly) so I have the chance to move the trigger ring a little.

In order to gain the "advance" I'm thinking I need to turn the trigger clockwise on the pulley just under 1 tooth???

I'm guessing also that unlike a dizzy, you leave the MAP pipe connected when checking the timing with a light???

Can someone confirm or advise please?

Many thanks in advance

Steve

First things first, are you sure you are reading the comb thing properly?  The big spike is TDC and each further spike is 4 degrees, the valleys in between are 2 degrees between the spikes.

Hi Dan, many thanks for your reply

I wasn't sure on the marks, but a search on the forum earlier showed an excellent image. I have based my "out" on this as before hand, I thought it was even further.

Going off this diagram I am around 8 degrees when the megajolt is suggesting 12, with the max 5 deg advance on the program

The best way to sort this, would be to remove the megajolt and just run it on the ford edis system. It will run at a fixed 10 degrees like this, then make your adjustments until you have it spot on.........

You do have 5 degree's of adjustment in the megajolt software, but it will make thing easier in the future. If you do get it spot on now........

Thank DILLIGAF, I presume I can just take the plug or 12v feed from the megajolt box and as long as the EDIS has power, it will still run.

Can you confirm that I need to turn the ring "clockwise" on the pulley to make the required adjustment?

Many thanks

Steve

Really before making any adjustment we need to find out what it's running at now, yes just unplug the jolt and make sure the edis is powered and it'll run. You'll need to install a new wire to power the coilpack if your using the rev limiter.......

Another option would be to set every station to 10 degrees in the megajolt, then check it. But personally I got it running on the edis, first as this way if theres ever a problem with the jolt you can just unplug it and limp home on a fixed 10 degree's......

Hi DILLIGAF

I did what you suggested this evening and with the fuse out of the MJ it showed 8 deg BTDC, so I only seem to be 2 deg out. I re adjusted the offset by 2 deg in the MJ program and sent to the unit. All seems to be in order now. Sense checked with fuse in & out.

Many thanks for the assistance

Regards

Steve
