Hello,

I have an issue with my speedo reading wrong, i think its best to give you some history of the car.....

My early July 1967 MK1 Austin Super de Luxe started life as a 1275 Auto.

It changed hands several times and the second to last owner decided to change the auto engine and box to a 998 engine fitted with a 1128 gearbox but never finished the conversion.

The last owner prior me bought the car, partially stripped it with the intentions of restoring it and gave up.

The car then passed onto me, and I have just spent the last 6 years restoring the car.

The car is still fitted with the 998 engine although rebuilt as is the 1128 gearbox fitted with a 3.7 fd (64/17) and a standard 22g927 lay gear.

I changed the 90 mph 1376 speedo (not sure if this was the original or one that was changed with the 998 conversion) to a genuine second hand cooper s 120mph 1280 speedo.

With fitting the s speedo I used guessworks calculator to correct the speedo gearing and I changed from a 17/6 to the recommended 18/6.

The car is now restored, MOT'ed and on the road. The car has 165/70/10 Dunlop R7 tyres fitted.

The speedo is reading well out. I have listed below the speedo readings verse the TOMTOM reading. I do agree satnav speeds are not 100% accurate but the TOMTOM speed is pretty close compared to the VW Polo and Skoda Fabia VRS I own.

SPEEDO / TOMTOM 1st ATTEMPT / TOMTOM SECOND ATTEMPT

20 / 12

30 / 19

40 / 28 / 25

50 / 36 / 32

Comparing the dials on my s speedo to a 90 mph speedo 20 is about 12mph, 30 is about 20mph, 40 about 28..... you get the picture.

Is it possible I have a 90mph speedo head in my 120mph speedo??

Seeing as MK1 s speedos are so rare and pricey is there another speedo that would have head to give me a correct reading I can then build into my s speedo for a long term fix

Failing that for a short term fix what speedo gearing would i need to fit?

Thanks Dave

Looking at that site again it mentions a 120mph speedo should be a 1248 and a 1280 is a 90mph speedo, so it looks like i might have the wrong head :-(

although it doesnt state cooper s next to the 120mph speedo only 1275gt/25/1100 special

The turns per mile should be on the front of the speedo, usually in the small print.......
