Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a new exhaust system, because the one I have now (2" system) is bad performance-wise and doesn't sound good at all (DTM).

The one I'm really interrested in is the Maniflow works exhaust (the one they sell at Somerford mini) but is it really worth the money or would I be better off buying a normal 1.75" single box centre exit exhaust?

And those RCM thingies, are they any good?

+ the manifold I'm wanting to use is the stage II medium bore LCB from Maniflow.

The engine is a 1275cc with an HIF44 and electronic ignition.

Thanks in advance,

Sven

If you've got money to burn or Mk1/2 works rally replica you may think paying thats a fair price. But at over twice the price of a classic twin box system I for one don't......

The RCM is really for engines with big cams, to pull peak torque down the rev range a bit.........

What you can say about Maniflow is that their products are beautifully made and they fit.  I guess a Mk. 1 system might be worth the cost if you are trying for total authenticity, but it's a lot of money and I doubt the noise level would be acceptable for many track day meets (if that is what you have in mind).

The car is going to be used for regularity rallies and maybe for slalom so noise level is no problem :P but what I'm actually asking is: is the works exhaust actually better for performance than a normal Maniflow system or is it the same?

Noise level will be a problem if you fail scrutineering ;D .

The best system for a rally car is a twin-box Maniflow or a twin-box RC40. With the RC40 it is slightly quieter, but the boxes don't have skid plates on the front, so for rallying these need to be added as a rough road could easily knock the system off. I always weld the twin-boxes and pipes together after doing a trial-fit to prevent them from coming off. Then I use extra mountings.

The old 'works' system is really made for replicas of the original works cars and is, IMHO, a bit expensive for actual rally use.

There's only one scrutineering per year for these types of motorsport and I've already passed it and they don't even check how loud the exhaust is and I assume it can't get much louder than the exhaust I have now + all rallies over here are on very narrow, very smooth tarmac roads with on either side of the road a ditch so there's little chance I'll knock the exhaust off unless I end up in one of those ditches :P.

I think I'll go for the Maniflow 1 7/8 ext.dia.(1 3/4 int.dia.?), single box, centre exit system...

Stop me if I'm making the wrong choice!

I think youre likely to fail the noise level with a single box, but if really want a single you can try it and eventually just replace the middle pipe with one with the resonator.

With the exhausts its not only a problem with catching on the off-roads, you'll soon discover that they'll hang around during actual spiritated driving, then if falls off you have to retire.  Took a while to me to work out the optimal fitment.

They don't check the noise level over here (Belgium) but you need to have at least one silencer (=single box exhaust system).

My father once took all the silencers off his Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9 and drove around with it (until our mechanic told him it wasn't good for the engine), without any police officer making him pull over and it was loud enough to make your ears bleed :P!

+ my current exhaust is a single box system and it has always past MOT like that.

If so then run just the rear box, its also probably a bit better performance wise on the big bore variety engine, just get a 1,75" size, you'll also be amazed how much easier is to tune engines with the proper size exhaust.
