Reduce Throaty Sound?

Today I checked the tappets and number 1 was a but tight so I set them all again and now its just more throaty but now its all the time at all speeds when floored...
Before it was just really bad at 70 when floored.
Just wondering how I can reduce it?
It's a pretty standard 1275 with 266 and manifold 1.75"
I set them to 16thou as said on Kent specifications but if I set them to say 14thou, could that refuce the sound?
Cheers

what air filter do you have? K&N ones are normally very noisy on full throttle. standard ones are much quieter

It's just more now since I set the tappets again...
Spark plugs are white/grey... Is that normal?

The cone filter I had on mine when I bought it made it very very noisy at motorway cruising and overtaking.
Wasn't too bad at lower speeds/revs.
Standard airbox with K&N filter is much much better. Think I gained a little bottom end torque and lost a tad top end power, but IMO that's better.
