Would a HIF38 be good for my 998? and how should I tune it? I know about using the damper and adjust if the revs fall etc Is that method ok?

hif38 is a good carb, but bear in mind there is no lifting pin on the HiF to help you set it.

Surely lift the piston through the mouth of the carb works alright?

yes, but you put a restriction into the flow of air. This upsets the mixture, as well as you needing to remove the air filter, another restriction to the air whilst you try to lift the piston. You really need to set up the mixture, as you intend to run it. A good starting point for a 38 and a pancake, less restrictive, filter is AAA needle, whereas the standard casing, with a K&N is AAU..

Some HIF 38s have a lifting pin and others dont, just use the blade of a small screwdriver to lift the slide very slightly and go from there, and To adjuster mixture - screw the adjuster in to richen, out to weaken.

Thanks guys, I fitted it yesterday and used a screwdriver to lift the piston as I remember seeing before. Runs great now, just needs a little more fine tuning but its otherwise there.

I have a pancake filter with AAA needle

hello guys and gals! i have two hif38, and one has the lift pin and the other doesn't. my question are as follows:

1. what are the pros & cons of the lift pin

2. is one superior to the other

3. were they manufactured simultaneously or one superseded the other

thank you,
