Hi,
I have 1275 '94 Sprite.
It's has developed an annoying clattering noise at idle, which goes away when running if I'm off the pedal but as soon as you back on it appears again until the revs pick up again and then I'm not sure sure if its still there and just drowned out by all the other noise. At first I thought it was the 1.5 rockers on the cover but its not speed related, ie it doesn't get faster as you go faster, so I'm a bit stumped where to look.
Could something to do with clutch do this?

If it were the tensioner would it not pick up with engine speed?

Had a look at things today. Rocker cover off, no sign of wear of the inside of it or the rockers so new gasket and put it back. What I did notice just idling on the drive is that it doesn't start until the engine is warm and it stops when I dip the clutch.
Just listening and using the old bit of doweling trick I couldn't track down where it's coming from.
Does this help at all?

If you get Noisy clattering at idle in neutral, and the noise stops when you push the clutch pedal down. Also if in neutral you increase the revs to say 1200RPM the clattering noise will stop. Then this is most likely Idler gear rattle. It's a characteristic of Mini's.

Ok just decided to start pulling the engine out today so there won't be any vid!
Just got to get the servo out of the way and release the mounts :)
