I was lucky with the floor as I first painted underneath with zinc 182 primer and the stonechip cracked in a few places but dried ok, so I decided to leave it as removing it all would have been a load of hassle, luckily it all dried out ok was just the thinner in stonechip softening the zinc 182 which cause some stonechip to slide before drying. Once dry I managed to over coat them so very few are actually visible now. I had visions of scraping everything off. That was my first lesson learnt and main reason I decided to use 2k paint just took me a while to tool up for it. Hoping to get rest painted before weather gets to cold, then do doors and bonnet in the spring, can spend most of winter fitting stuff back on the shell then.
But thanks for positive comments.

looks awsome! i also had that problem of reaction in my stone chip when i done my underneath i painted over red zinc rust proof stuff and it went willed cracked in certain places in tunel and under wings i had to re sand down and put some more stone chip straight over and that got rid of it. i went up to a paint shop and just asked them why it done it and they said you should of put a coating of primer over the zinc but before the stone chip to stop the reaction. so i looked like a idiot and will do it better next time. good project i will be watching thanks tom  =]

I have another lined up for a refresh when I finish this one, a mk2 cooper with factory recliners and twin tanks, I restored it when I was 18 so approx 27 years ago, unfortunately was painted in synthetic so now I have been practicing on this one I want to strip it down and repaint it, only issues are as it was restored so long ago the panels available now were not about so it will never be perfect as it needs no panels replacing due to rust so can't really warrant cutting out good metal just to replace with better mini machine panels. But want to get it moving again as not been on road for about 15 years, I just moved onto better cars but couldn't sell my minis so just stored them. Am getting some interest back in them now so have invested some time and money in them. If it proves one thing it's that if the interest sways just put it away until it comes back as I would have regretted getting rid of them.

Daz if you ever decide to sell it do let me know as I have a Van with the exact initial letters SAL and would love to have a set.

I believe SAL is a Nottinghamshire registration although mine is X so a bit later than yours.

Would be great to get them together someday.

Yes years ago I traced original owners and went to Nottingham to meet the 2nd owner, the first owner didn't want to know for some reason. I have had it for so long don't think I could sell, I only bought the 850 for practice before I redo this one, its got a few rare parts on it like factory recliners and right hand tank. Just I trusted someone else to paint it and even gave them the paint, they said the cellulose I gave them they couldn't use and did it in synthetic, so I have my work cut out to get it all off. Will be redone in 2k when finished current one. Hopefully not speaking to soon but painting isn't as hard as I thought, the prep however took me a while.

My van came from somewhere in derby and i managed to track down the 3rd owner from me also. I understand about not selling though ive had the van 10 years so far and plan to have it for a lot longer.

Got a couple of coats on rest of shell today before weather changes, quite pleased with result just need to lightly flat with p2000 to get rid of nibs and polish it up, might invest in a rotary polisher for Xmas, at least I can get on with the running gear now while the paint hardens off. Really hope I can get it on the road next year not driven a mini for a long time.

Thanks can't wait to see your project coming together I keep an eye on it, I made a mistake on roof but have since added 20% thinner rather than 10%, presume paint was a little thick for colder weather and didn't flow out as good as I hoped, but today it has flowed out pretty smooth

It's my first time painting a whole car, done odd panels before, but decided to do this one myself as have the other one to do after and can't afford to pay someone else to do them. I have had a learning curve but am getting better now, I did invest in a devilbiss spraygun though and can say that you get what you pay for, its atomises the paint really well, very little overspray when set correctly and really lays the paint flat, mine is only an sri pro though as most my painting after this will be single panels and it easily runs with an airfed mask on a 3hp compressor. I would have liked to get a gti pro but needed another 3hp compressor to run one with my mask, another point is get good filtration and get the air dry.
