I didn't have it shot blasted, but stripped underside to bare metal, cut out rust and used a spot blaster in small areas that had surface rust that couldn't be sanded, then wiped jenolite over complete underside, followed by David's zinc 182 and stonechip then 2 coats of 2k gloss, had a few crazing issues with the stonechip over the zinc paint but it dried ok and I did not want to strip it again so just over coated where its likely to be seen, it all dried ok just stonechip softened primer and slid in a few places, think I would use epoxy primer on my next one. I was lucky though as this shell only had issues where previous repairs had been done incorrectly the floors were sound after cleaning most the underside still had green paint on boot floor was worse area of the car, boot hinge panel was perfect so was bootlid it was a previous 1 owner car always garaged. The trim is mint apart from a small rip in drivers seat caused by diaphragm splitting and not being replaced.

Did you sand back to bare metal or use a paint stripper?

I scraped all under seal off with a paint scraper and sanded back with p80 disc, anywhere then showing rust was either cut out or blasted with my spot blaster or cleaned with sanding pads. Chemical stripping is very messy. The heel board, wheel tubs and large parts of boot floor were replaced along with m-machine inner sills to first groove. My toe board and most of floor had no signs of rust at all think the usual mini oil leaks helped the front end.

Thought I had better post a little update, I didn't do much over the winter but started work on it again now. Have flatted and polished most of the paintwork and started painting some of the parts to go back on, still a long way to go but have been going through all the boxes of stuff to find out what new parts I need and what is useable,

Good work mate.

Did you paint it in the garage? If so fair play!

Well a small update one step forward and a little step back.
Painted inside the boot and started to put a few bits on to make it look a bit better
d2eb783ca88015d37c7ed694e6d3e682.jpg

Had a little accident when wet sanding the front wing so had to repaint it, this is now painted but waiting drying so I can wet sand the nibs out and polish it up,

Think I need to build a bit of a booth when I do my other one as dust is a problem in the open garage.
Dust nibs can be seen clear on here

Comes up ok after a wet sand and polish though just hard work

Hopefully off to himley tomorrow to find some bits but weather report not looking good.

A superb finish from a garae spray job, just goes to show you can save alot by doing it yourself, my garage is very dusty/ cob weds everywere, so i'l be sure to invest in those anti-static sheetings.

Had a few bargains at himley today, got a new old stock speedometer as I had the wrong one
b7fc1bfdbc02cef47a0836f26987d052.jpg

Bought new rubber gaskets for rear lights and a petrol filler seal
0ec9f1c86cbf779291593a13b514b388.jpg

I fitted one headlamp today to trial fit the plastic buckets I had and the seem ok for the money
652bf19a91083512dd881430c101de34.jpg

I also bought some rear brake back plates while they were on offer at minisport so can start building them back up now.

They money soon goes though when on the build up process.

Just need to find a good cleaner for my original seats and trim, but being grey fleck I don't want to ruin it.

Another small update, been busy sorting the parts out and cleaning, I tested my new mirka ceros and wet sanded the drivers front wing then buffed it with menzerna polish, find this stuff very good and much less messy than the g3 I used before. Also sanded the tank and gave it a coat of etch ready to high build it and give it a coat of 2k black. Pics are a bit dark and off my phone

Tank prepared
e3447c8f85c20041a779dd8f1f63fc6e.jpg

Front fitted with headlamps, I now think its beginning to look like a car at last, ignore the sound deadening it's got to go inside, just seemed the best place to keep it for now
973903348d8b1e217ebdfdea9ef2bd4e.jpg

A few bits of trim sorted and cleaned up
d86c143e5bcef83c5ccffacac4ad7bbf.jpg

Also started figuring out where the odd bits of sound deadening I have found go
05c1513c928f5559f01fc4744111b4aa.jpg

Can't get to do any more work on it this weekend but next job is sorting the loom out and then can fit the speedo housing properly and the dash trim. I can finally see all the hard work coming together. Fortunately for me most the parts are useable and trim is very good for its age so doing a sympathetic restoration rather than concourse and keeping as much original parts as I can. In my opinion it's better this way as not interested in making it look new just want it to look its age but in good condition.
