This is going to sound really dodgy but I promise it's not! I just bought a three clock setup from "ToM 2012" and I'm fairly sure the mileage isn't near my current so is there a way I can clock it back to match up with mine? 

 

Also, is the calibration on these things normally the same, I realised after buying it might not be - my speedo's currently about 7% off so I don't want my new one to be even worse!

There is a way, but to be honest, the indicated milage covered by a vehicle we are interested here is of little relevance.

 

Best, and most honest bet, is to record the change of odometer, noting the reading at point of change, and the new current reading. - add this to the vehicle history, with an explanation behind what was done.

legally NO. The mileage that is recorded on the mots is there to stop the mileage being altered. Jens way is the way to do it

Take a picture of both speedos next to each other displaying the mileage. Fit the "new" speedo. Then you can calculate the correct mileage should you need to.

Do you mean on a center binnacle? Because if so, you can alter it as I did it to mine last week after buying another (mine stopped working then after pulling it apart I now have two that work )

It's not illegal to change it, it's illegal to try to mislead a buyer after it's changed. You can put it back to 1 if you want as long as you tell buyers that it has been changed

think its just a case of take it apart and put it to what you want! or stick the end of the cable in the drill and spin it back round to the milage

Much easier taking it apart, there's a little metal clip thing which hold the numbers together, just take that off and you can put it to whatever you want . If I'd done mine with a drill, I think I'd till be doing it now, it took forever!

I've got to do the same job to a set of 120mph gt clocks if a new speedo cable doesn't fix the problem of the original speedo reading what it wants to and bouncing around. That's providing my new speedo on the spare set of gt clocks I have work, if it does I'll have to wind the mileage on the new/replacement dial back. Otherwise it will look like come mot time that I've done an extra 30k within a year.

Defiantly true, after every full engine rebuild I always set the clock back to 00000 and i always explain the mileage is linked to the engine not the car, nothing dodgy intended at all, just a bit of common sense

I always set the speedo to 00000 after a re-build and restoration. I'm going to change the speedo in my Cooper 'S' as it should have a 120 mph one but has a 130 mph one. I've found a 120 speedo and will get Speedy Cables to overhaul it and re-set it to the mileage currently on my 'S' which was zero when I restored it in 1995 and is around 16000 mile now..

This is the speedo in question...any ideas? I cant seem to get the numbers to turn back, only forward, and only by turning the orange digits which clocks over the rest of the miles etc etc.
