Can I do it or is it frowned upon?

If i do, will I need serial numbers and certification?
How do I get these?

I ask because the cages and frames I've made for the landrovers have been inspected on the spot and haven't needed it but I don't think it will go that way if we start racing the mini. So what do I do?

Before we start with the "can you or should you" replies, it will be made to spec, my tube bender is a JD2 model3 so it's not a centre push jobbie, all the bends are planned out with bend tech pro, the tube is notched properly and I'm a competent welder.

It would Be nice to build my own but if I can't, can't

Let me know what you think
Doug

I started a thread on the Uphill Racers forum a while back about whether I needed a roll cage certificate for my now departed Ibiza. Two of the replies I had were interesting from your viewpoint;

"The cage in my Davrian doesn't have a certificate and I ran that in modified - never had any problems.

It's more than a decade ago, but when I asked the scrutineer that did the log book about it he was of the opinion that a roll cage certificate was not required as anyone could make their own cage, provided they constructed it in a way that complied with the requirements in the book."

and;

"You are still allowed to make your own cage as stated above. I think that without a certificate you have to drill a 1/8hole so the scrutineer can verify the correct wall thickness. A guy I knew from years back had actually made his cage from steam pipe and the scrute spotted it but it was obvious from the construction that it could have withstood any accident. The guy was a coded welder and he had his certificate and the tube spec in his pocket and I believe the car is still running. I reckon the cage weighed more that the Mini....."

I have a feeling that the comment about drilling a hole in the cage is no longer required - I'm sure I read that that requirement had been withdrawn somewhere. I'd say that probably your best bet, as usual, would be to contact a local scrutineer & ask him.

I also think that 'Cannon' (although he may have changed his user name) on here is building a stage car & has made his own cage, but I can't immediately find the thread at the moment.

I found the thread I mentioned above, he's changed his name to TopCatCustom - he's doing (or was, he hasn't updated the thread since March)some tremendous work on his Mini. The roll cage, which looks to me home made, is here;

- scroll down to post 22.

I think if it were me though, I'd still get advice from my local scrute before starting, as they will sometimes tell you things that need doing that are differenet from what it says in the Blue Book....
